I like the M1A series from Springfield, but am not to keen on the fiberglass top handguard.

Is there a wood option out there? It sure would round out the looks of a wood stock M1A

I've got one on mine and it does help the looks. Not as practical as the fiberglass HG but better looking.

There were very early wood ones on M14's, my Marine neighbor said they would catch on fire and have smoke poring put of them under automatic fire.

Tony over at LAW483.com can make one for you and usually have it match the grain/features of your stock.

Boyds sells them, my guess is that's where Fulton gets them. I bought a M1A stock from Fulton (military "thin" style with FA cut out) and the stock is marked as made by Boyds even though Boyds doesn't show that style on their site. BTW, Vanderhave's military stock finish and Fairtrimmers gives a great "been sitting in the armory for 60 years" finish to the wood.

Got mine from Springfield about 20yrs ago so I don't know if they still carry them. You can also backorder one from Boyds:
