Hold the metal with a channel lock and twist the wood. I don't have an sks, but your image makes it look like the AK hand guard

Normally the handguard is held with a pin that can be driven out at least on my Chinese one. If this is a different SKS, it looks from the pic there is a screw instead of the pin? Just dealt with this a couple of days ago doing the same thing you are.

I just went through this too. I just about beat mine to death with a hammer and punch, actually ended up breaking the wood. Mine was not coming out period! And yes I did dremel it. Ended up drilling the pin out. Wish I had done that to begin with because it was super easy. That had to be the softest metal I've ever drilled .. I love Chinese quality ;)

This is a replacement Russian model. I hit it several times with a punch with no luck of it moving.

So would I need to have a replacement pin if this one is driven out or could the original one be salvaged?

understand these guns are handmade in cottage industry shops - compared to modern factories - normally by unskilled workers. Their goal is assembly, not ease of dis-assembly, like US firearms. AK's and SKS's are very crude by today's standards, but that's why they are so reliable. I think drilling it out and maybe replacing with a slightly larger diameter pin is the ticket.
