Ever since Tony Rumore bailed out of building them, if I were you I would consider the .50 Beowulf.

Teppo Jutsu makes a nice .458. My understanding is that it was Marty that developed the system and cartridge, not Tony. Tony built the prototype and first examples though. From the Teppo Jutsu Website:

"The .458 SOCOM was developed by Marty ter Weeme, founder of Teppo Jutsu LLC in 2000. The impetus was an informal ("beer and barbeque") discussion with a senior member of the US special operations community regarding the apparent lack of effectiveness of the 5.56 x 45 cartridge in recent conflict. ...After the design was completed, Tony Rumore of Tromix Corp in Broken Arrow, OK was contacted to build the first prototype. Based on the favorable reviews, commercial production was started and the initial rifles were produced by Tromix. Currently, several firms offer rifles or upper assemblies in this caliber, including AR-15s, AK-47s, single shot and bolt action rifles."

However, Rock River Arms is now making and upper/rifle available - RRA is a strong company, that will be around a while, and known for good customer service.

And other companies, but I don't think Tony/Tromix is making them anymore:

Is the RRA .458 shipping yet?

I see you can order it, but is that a waitlist, or are they actually shipping?

Hi Guys,

I just picked up an RRA 458 upper in a store. It appears that these uppers are now being shipped. Ammo suppliers that I have found are as follows:
Midway USA, Corbon (of course), Reeds Custom Ammo (best prices-backorders, they are swamped), and I think there is another but I can't remember who it is. Anyway, Reeds seems to have the best prices so far, but, then again, it depends on the type of cartridge you are looking for. Teppo Jitsu is now advertising that they are shipping the 458 Socoms. Does anyone have any experience with the RRA 458?

I should have them here in about a week.
I ordered them in February 2006 and just got a phone call last week that they are ready.

Is there a clear advantage of the .458 SOCOM over the .50 Beowulf or vice-versa? It would be kind of cool to have an AR in one of these calibers, but it just seems like complete overkill for just about anything!

I have one in San Diego you can check out if interested and I also reload it if you want to check it out. Reloads like everything else, just bigger. I've shot the beowolf too and I think they are ford and chevy. You'll like either. 458 is a little more $ but you have lots of bullet options. 50 BEO is less $$ and apears to have a bigger following. check out www.458socomforums.com
