Whats up guys,

I'm currently in Visalia, grew up in the Madera-Fresno area. About to purchase my first gun looking at the Ruger sr9c.

I just bought a house and have been going back and forth over quite a few guns for home defense, first it was the Mossberg 500 cruiser shotgun, then I was looking at 22lr and 308 rifles. Decided to pass on these.

Now I'm i'm researching hand guns in so I could practice at the range while having something still decent for the home, the sr9c felt so right at Ace's Guns in Tulare. The reviews are great online. He also had a used browning that was pretty darn nice, but used.

I want to review a few more models possibly at Prk Arms I just learned about in Visalia to keep my options open. I've looked at the XD-9, Glock 19 and 13 they diddn't give the same feel as the ruger. Any other models I should look at, my price range is 400-700 that you would recommend before I pull the trigger?

Welcome to Calguns. Check out the handgun section, lots of debate over which gun to buy. You might also want to check out the firearms for sale section, you never know what might be for sale in your area.

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome, and also for the suggestions. My friend just bougth the Ruger LC9 at a shop in bakersfield. The size interests me, but I have my heart set on the sr9c. I went to purchase Friday at PRK in Visalia and they were out. Hopefully by Weds they will have more in, wow the store was busy. Nice store if you haven't checked it out, lots of variety.

There's a good range in Visalia, the Sportsman's Club. The range is out by the police range just east of Highway 99. The club membership lets you buy guns through the club's FFL, so anything you see at budsgunshop.com that is CA legal is yours for the asking. One spendy gun will pay for a year's membership, easy.

There is also a good range to the south in Tulare, a bit of a drive but it is run by the Deputy Sheriff's Association.

There's a gunshop called Easley's, they generally have an SR9C in stock. That's a REAL good CCW pistol and they sell a LOT of them.

There's also a pawnshop WAY east up Highway 198 that sells a lot of guns, THEY have SR9C's in stock as well. I saw a $595 Glock 22 there the other day, it's a $499 pistol from Bud's online - the yearly membership is only $60......

I have a Glock 33, my Dad has an SR9C, the SR9C has an amazing trigger and is MUCH slimmer than the G26/27/33. Very different animal in terms of a carry gun, maybe not so different for home use.

Welcome, have fun, stay safe!

Regards,
Brian in CA

Thanks for the info Brian, I just moved here in October, I haven't heard of that range I'm going to have to get a membership, wow so FFL right at the club to make purchases, thats sweet. So you just pay the membership and you can shoot all year? Does it get packed there? I tried to get that sr9c but oh well, maybe my 2nd or 3rd gun down the road. I'm anxious to break in the glock.

Well i am new here on the forum and just went by PRK but they were closed.I need to get a 1911 of some kind for me and the wife,i mostly have old west replicas for shooting Sass.Any of you guys need hand made leather go to www.cascity.com leather forum and yee shall find.it where i hang out under GunClick Rick...There are folks that take very serious they're leather crafting.Check out earlier posts and see what i mean,i have a few.
I am hoping the one in Visalia stays open, not like Sportsmens warehouse did,it is my belief they were part of fast and furious in away, but that's just my opinion..Would love to get a sass or fast draw event goin out at the range or a range anywhere for that matter,i have to go to almost Bakersfiels to shoot at 5dogs,or the other way to shoot the Kings River regulators.Think it would be possible to do something like that???THanks for letting me join up.Well wishes to PRK :)

Welcome to the site and congrats on the new addition to the family. I am in Tulare and a member at Rankin Field which is a decent range, nothing over 100yds though. nice thing is it is so close, not like driving down to five dogs.

Not sure about Visalia Sportsman and how far you can shoot there or their hours, the FFL convenience might just be worth the price of membership though.

Rankin Field does not require a membership to shoot out there, but it is cheaper if you are going to go very much.

Rankin Field, that's the name I needed to know, I kept hearing from folks there was a range here in Tulare, but couldn't find the information on it. Thanks for the info. Do you happen to know the hours they are open? Found The address.

Rankin Field
20000 Road 140, Tulare, CA 93274-9135

I seen Visalia Sports man's listed 8:00am to 3:00pm Sat - Sun - Wed, which doesn't work for me unfortunately.

Glad to see another Central Valley CGNer! You'll love that Glock 26. I picked up a 27 as my HD/carry gun and I love it still a year and a half later.

If I might make a suggestion, if you don't want to shoot at a range, drive around and ask different farmers if you can shoot on their land. Most don't mind as long as you clean up after yourself and don't leave trash everywhere.

Funny you say that, I'm by the old golf course in visaila, I could have swore I heard people shooting one day.
