I have a question. I still don't have my first gun, I am going to buy my first gun. I just want to know which rifle I should get as my first rifle. I am on a budget so can anyone tell me which rifle I should get up to $250. I know that Big 5 sells the Marlin 795 22LR. There is a Big 5 not too far away from me. I just looking for a rifle for self-defense purposes. Thank you

The Marlin is a good choice. Then please Google "Appleseed"; you won't regret it.

Welcome, and good luck

Stay safe!

Welcome aboard! Also consider a Ruger 10/22.

A 22LR rifle wouldn't be my first choice for a self-defense gun, that's for sure.

Welcome to Calguns. A .22 rifle is not generally considered as a self defense gun but, that being said, 10 hits with a .22LR is better that several misses with a .30-06.

A .22 rifle is a great first gun because you can get lots of trigger time for very little money, a box of 500+ .22LRs at Walmart is less than $20.

Many pick up a 12 GA shotgun for home defense. They are generally not too expensive to buy and the ammo prices aren't too bad, practice with bird shot then keep it loaded with 00 buck at home.

Big-5 has sales on shotguns all the time and Turner's frequently has .22 rifles on sale.

Thank you all the answers. SoCal Bob sadly Walmart here where I live no longer carries weapons or ammo anymore. If a 22LR is a bad choice for self-defense then what would you guys recommend? Thank you again

Welcome, for HD I would go for a shotgun or handgun. A rifle for HD is not a good idea IMO.

SI,

Welcome to calguns! Ruger 10/22 was the first rifle I shot so I am partial to that option. You can most likey find a deal in your budget here in our marketplace (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/forumdisplay.php?f=91). :D

Welcome!

A few questions for you....

Have you ever fired a gun before? If so, what?

Do you plan to get into any type of hunting at all?

Where are you located? City apartment, suburban area or rural country?

Depending on your answers will decide on my recommendation. On top of this, I highly suggest seeking out some training facilities in your area. Most will have firearms to lend in the type of class you sign up for. You can learn a lot about basic firearm safety as well as proper use of that particular firearm. All these things will point you in the right direction of where to start your collection!

Thank you all for the answers. There are two gun stores nearby but both are out of my price range.

You should really do some more research before you jump into purchasing anything. Who told you purchasing ammo online is illegal? (unless you live in a select few areas of this state)

There is no easy answer. Similar to a religious debate or "which brand of car is best" argument. Everybody has different reasons for a different answer.

Welcome!

Very good info to consider.

I know that purchasing ammo online is now illegal here in California ?

Not true, except for a few special locations.
