I'm looking to get into the m4 platform. I have no prior experience with it. I enjoy my bolt actions from .17hmr to 30.06 and mil surp. And I love, love my black powder rifle. I feel the need to add the tool to my battery that only the classic American platform can fill.

I've narrowed it down to the Daniel Defense m4v4 at $1300.00 with no front sights or the Colt 6940 with matech buis at $1500.00. I want iron sights but will also add either red dot (aim pro) or holographic (eotech). So for the DD I will add either magpul or Troy Buis.

I know this permutation has been asked a million times but I'm tearing my hair out over here. Any thoughts to sway me one way or another.

Narrow it down to the basic parts - the upper and lower receivers. To be true to the original AR15 platform, go Colt. ALL the parts can be swapped out around the lower receiver and you can mix and match to your heart's content later on.

It's my first one and I prefer to go for a built rifle vs a build.

Have you held them both? Bringing a rifle to shoulder is a simple step that may help in making your decision.

Both are fine rifles and you really can't go wrong.

That being said, my vote goes to the DD.

My vote goes to DD.

IMO that Colt is UGLY. But that's my opinion.

You can't go wrong with either though.

I'd go with DD. You can't go wrong with "double Ds"

"classic American platform" desired? Easy answer.

Add the Colt first. Get a DD next time. ;)

Nice Tirebiter photo, think my dad fed him in the late forties or early fifties haha :oji:

Definitely COLT. It's like your first watch ought to be a Timex or your first car a Chevy. You can get into Rolex and Porsche later, but you want the classic, and COLT is 100% the way to go.

I have a S&W MP15 and wish I had a COLT instead! I wish I was smart enough to ask this before I bought!

To the op - go on youtube.com and search for Daniel Defense torture test - or maybe someone will be able to embed it here for you.

I personally own both and I have to say go with the Daniel Defense.

I have thousands of rounds through both weapons and I have to say the reliability and accuracy is a lot better with my DD. Its the M4V4 with their lightweight 16" barrel. Paired up with a ACOG and that thing is just a machine. Never failed me once!

The torture test that was brought up is pretty amazing to see too.

Noveske or Bravo Company

I have the DD M4V4 and love it!

edit. I have added the Magpul buis as well as the Eotech EXPS2. The slick top definitely give you plenty of real estate. I haven't added any issues with the gun with over 3000 rounds through her.

I can't speak for the Colt, but my gun has a Daniel upper, and its pretty nice. You consider building your own? if you build your own you're going to be ~ there ballpark give or take what parts you get, but you get to build it yourself, and it certainly is more enjoyable IMHO

Oh and I love my Troy sights. Fantastic quality.

I'd go with DD. You can't go wrong with "double Ds"

I bit the bullet and bought the Daniel Defense V5. I'm super excited and ready to spend the next ten days ordering ammo and other stuff. Now to educate myself on sights and optics.
