Anyone have any experience with these 7.62x54R AKs in the 16" barrel?
I've always wanted a battle rifle, but the price of .308 has turned me off.
Almost considering selling my AK in 5.45x39 to fund it...

Not owning an AK or a Mosin, I have little familiarity with the platform or round, so I must ask, why the fire suit?

As long as 20 rd mags were available id buy one in a heartbeat.

Meh, I'd be OK with 10 round mags with that round out of the AK I think.
I'm wondering if it would be more satisfying to shoot than the 5.45. Not that there is anything wrong with 5.45 at all, but sometimes bigger calibers are just fun.

The only problem with these rifles it is really difficult to get mags working.

Probably extremely more satisfying, at least for me. Love the 54r round, its like a dirt cheap 300 WinMag

What do you mean? Do PSLs and the like have mag problems as well? Because this is basically just a shortened PSL, right?

You are right this is shortened PSL made from kit, poly stock.PSL has a paratrooper

Why the Fire Suit...ever see pics of Fireballs coming out of Mosin M38's & M44's?

This is a psl kit with a shortened barrel. The receiver is made by NoDak Spud(nice piece of hardware).

There are no high capacity magazines. Before anyone mentiones it...yes I'm aware of people modding bren and lahti mags but they're not commercially available. Some magazine fitting may be required, but it shouldn't be too difficult.

This is CA, so I'm ok with 10 round mags.

This is why you need a fire suit. This is a 20" barrel (IIRC)

I've been eyeballing one of these, and even pondering the idea of getting a PSL kit and some time on a CNC turning center and... 54r isn't that much more expensive than x39, box for box nowdays.

I wonder if it has the same problem with heavy ball ammo as the PSL? Something about the bolt carrier velocity with heavy ball is enough to start banging the rear trunnion out of the rifle.

AKfiles...A few members own it. Gunboards also has a few owners of this rifle. One is a member on AKfiles and Gunboards...I have not seen him here. He goes by the name Slick and is from CA.

I like 7.62x54...Fun and cheap and accurate enough. Not sub MOA but you can pull it every so often if you go 3 shot group but that is rare and not a consistent group for the round.

Just plug the gas port if you are worried about heavy ball ammo and the PSL.

I have done it on my PSL, and the light ball now doesn't get ejected into a lunar orbit and the brass doesn't get all dinged up. I have not tried heavier ball as yet, but will here in the near future.

Before trying this I found a few folks on the internet (ya I know how reliable that is ;-) )that have done it and have had good results.

Sold out at AIM, Atlantic have them

Yes a Vepr would be a little more accurate and you would not have the magazine problems. But if you want an FPK, buy an FPK.

I have 5 magazines....1 does not function, 2 function with a little help, and 2 are reliable. As mentioned above, you just have to do little fitting which I have not gotten around to. And even the light ball surplus can move your trunion around.

But it is the one rifle that goes to range every trip :)

FYI here is mine:

http://calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=422950

I am about to take it apart to try and fix the trunion, put in the RSA trigger, a versapod adapter, and put it back together with the Blackhorsearsenal stock set.
