Anybody know the best place to get the surplus 20 rnd HK G3 / PTR91 magazines as rebuilds? Looks like they can be special ordered from callegalmags for $8 each, but I was wondering if there was anywhere less expensive considering the assembled mags can be had from Cheaper than Dirt for $1.97 for anyone in a free state.

Couple places to try. You can use Exile to have what ever you find shipped to him then pay him to dis-assemble or you can check his site and see what he has. Same thing at Mountain Armory.

So you could buy them here and have them shipped to Exile or Have Mtn Armory buy them here for you and pay him.

Thanks for the link to robertRTG.com, turns out they will disassemble the mags themselves and ship to CA. 10 mags for $40 shipped.

Nice to know I was not aware they were doing that.

+1 for robertrtg.

Definitely the best prices for anything H&K G3/91.

Nice. Now the question is, do you guys prefer steel or alloy mags??

I bought aluminum because of the price. I dont have the rifle yet but figured I'd grab the mags while they're still cheap. I'll block 2 or 3 and keep the rest around in case the standard cap ban goes away some day.

Guess I mean alloy rather than aluminum

Alu mags are cheap and should be thought of as disposable. For the cost, they aren't even worth spending more than a few minutes trying to adjust feed lips or investigating binding of the follower, if such a fault is occurring. The steel mags are heavy but built to last by comparison and can take a real beating. Any rust or pitting on the springs or follower and those parts should be replaced. Most of the steel mags I've seen were in very good condition.

CETME steel mags are another choice, but now that they cost more than the HK mags it's less attractive. For looks, they are interesting since they have a gentle curve compared to the straight HK mags.
