The thread about whether Sigs are overpriced or not got me thinking...

What's the best sweetheart deal you've made?

Something you bought for way cheap, or had someone buy something from you for way over market value. ('cuz they wanted it that bad, not 'cuz you took advantage of them)

I'll start...

An ex-boyfriend of my wife (nice guy, we're all friends) sold me a Sig P239 in 9mm with a range bag full of stuff - 2 holsters, gun rug, eyes/ears, about 200rounds of ammo, plus an ammo can full of cleaning supplies for $100.00:43:

He had moved to Baja and found some ammo in his truck one day  and freaked out, so he wanted to get rid of anything gun-related that could get him in trouble in Mexico. He knew it was worth more but just wanted it gone.

He said "make me an offer" and I was gonna' start low at $250 and go up from there, but instead I said "I dunno, whaddya' want for it?"

He said "How 'bout a hundred bucks?" To which I replied "Do you have your ID on you? Let's go to the gunstore."

Again, if you took advantage of somebody I don't want to hear about it.

I bought an ar15 a few years back for $500 with 5 mags, a gun case, and a bunch of ammo. I shot the ammo, sold a few mags, kept the case, and ended up getting $550 for the gun and a couple mags. Nothing too crazy there.

My favorite gun deal though was my recent Kahr CW9. I bought it from Sportsmans Warehouse and after using my Christmas and birthday gift cards I paid $21 out of pocket.

Oh I also was quick on the draw a year or two back and scored an unfired 10/22 with some ammo for $140.

So... I get this email one day from a guy in Santa Rosa... wants to sell his SIG P226 .40SW.

He says it's in the Santa Rosa Police Station, and that it was confiscated becuse he tried to 'hurt' himself and he is no longer allowed to have a gun. He made a point of saying that he did NOT try to hurt himself with the gun.

Says... if I want to buy the SIG, I would have to pick it up at the Police Station in Santa Rosa.

Santa Rosa is just over an hour drive for me from Ukiah.

He never indicated a price... so...,

I email him back, and tell him I am not interested and thanked him for emailing me... and that SIG is really not my cup of tea.

Well... about a few weeks later he sends me another email. He is in a frantic now... says the Police Department is on the verge of destroying the SIG and he REALLY-REALLY does NOT want hat to happen. He is just sick over the thought of it all...

So I say "okay... how much are you asking for it?"

He says... "one hundred dollars... and you don't have to pay me until after you pick it up from the Police Dept."

I tell him "you know what that gun is worth right...!?!" He says "ya, but you are the only FFL who replied to my email... so I'll give you a great deal...!" He says again "I just have a REAL PROBLEM with them destroying a gun... it's just NOT RIGHT...!"

I picked-up the SIG the next day, and mailed the 100$ check to him that same day when I got home.

Best deal I ever made... the SIG was NIB w/ 3 magazines, not a scratch, not a ding... no rust... it was and still is perfect. I didn't sell it, and it's NOT for sale. She is mine

About a year ago I purchased two Dan Wesson supermags, one a 375 and the other 445. The 445 is actuall a very rare hunter pack. Paid about $700 out the door for both of them from a shop in Modesto. A calgunner actually sent me a pm saying they were at the shop. Just sold the 375 for 1k, the 445 is probably worth $1,500.

Another great buy was this s&w pre 17 with a 3 digit serial number. Got it for
$500. I have a set of period correct grips for it (not shown) but the numbers don't match. Last 3 digit pre 17 sold for over $1,300 without box/tool.

Though not the best deal, the luckiest I got was purchasing my pre lock 627pc "blood work" revolver. Around 300 made, cannot be shipped into the state because of the 2.5 inch barrel. It is probably the most desirable run of revolvers in the last 40 years. Found it on a Sunday afternoon at the cow palace gun show. Probably 10,000 people walked past it before I did none of them knew what it was. Paid $1,300, I have no idea what it would be worth in California. Last one on gunbroker went over 2k

Not gun related but;

I bought some Duplo Lego for my kids, $10 for a tub with about $100 of lego in it.

I bought some baby gates for $25, used them for a year and a half, then my wife sold them for $50.

Back when I first started working, my friends brother-in-law was a "financial advisor" and asked everyone he knew to refer him to 3 friends, so my friend referred me. I had no idea what I was doing but I bought his mutual funds and paid into it for a few years, probably $4k or so before I stopped because I didn't like that the fund was "front loaded" meaning they took 2% of my money before even investing it, so it felt a bit scammy. 25 years later, it's worth about $40k. So, that was a good deal in retrospect.

But investments don't count i guess, or else someone's going to pipe in about how they bought Apple stock for $20/share just before the iPhone was announced.

The fact that you felt the need to specify that you bought them "for your kids" makes me think maybe you've spent a little time on the floor playing with these yourself.

Anyone else hearing Austin Powers voice saying "That's not my bag, baby"?

I was actually thinkng gun-related but I didn't specify in my original post, so I guess it's all fair game now.

That's a scary thought huh? If i was in Mexico, the last thing I would be concerned about would be bullets in my car. ****, I would be running from the Cartels shooting at anything that moves. It's the Wild West reborn down there, decapitating people every other day.

Bet you wished you had some bullets then... lol

From the same buddy I also bought a Belgium made over and under shotgun. Also probably in the $3k range. I paid $250 for it.

A guy I work with GAVE me an Inland M-1 Carbine & a 1890 Winchester 22 short pump w/octagon barrel a couple of months ago.
I was listening to KEX radio in Portland, Or in the early 80s. They had a on-air classified ad program at the time, and advertised was a "30-06 rifle". I called the guy, and it was a 1903 springfield. I went to look at it thinking it to be a Bubba'd POS, and was suprised when I got there and found a still-in-cosmoline perfect rifle with 18" bayonet for $150. I talked him down to $125 and bought it.
I took it out and shot it a couple of times-it shot great, then one day I looked up the serial # to see when it was made and found that it was one of the 1917 manufactured non-double heat-treated ones that 98% were destroyed. I quit firing it, and took it to the twice-yearly gun show at the P-I building in Portland to sell.
As I was walking through the show I saw a display that was a wall of 1903s-every variation of 1903 ever made! Beautiful! the only missing space on that wall was the painted silhouette where the gun I was holding in my hands went. Talk about bargaining chips! I traded that collector my rifle for a Winchester M-1 Garand straight across, and he was on top of the world.
There is no thrill like the thrill when you complete a collection that you never thought you would be able to.
And if he were posting on this thread that would prolly be his best deal also.

Both of these deals were from the sig forum. About 10 years ago I scored some awesome deals. The first was for a West German P225 like new for $300.00 this was way before the P6 surplus hit the market.

Second was a P226 that was supposed to be a certified pre owned for $425.00. I ordered it from the dealer and I guess he oversold because I waited over a month and no gun arrived. Finally I get a shipping confirmation and when I go to DROS it I discover he sent me a NEW P226. He couldn't get another CPO so he said just keep the new one and he refused to let me pay him more.

NIB Colt Trooper blued 4" for $300.00.

My co-workers Father had passed away and his Mom needed the $. He sold me the Colt and asked me to buy the Ruger. I told him I had that gun, no need for a twin. After a couple of weeks he tells me $225.00 if I take it this week. I agreed and we went to the Gun store the next day for the PPT. I did tell him he was selling very low. He said I was decent to him on the Colt deal and he would rather deal with me than anyone else.

my first gun, back in 1991- Glock 17 police trade-in. one of the kids behind the counter at Turner's in Fountain Valley, upon learning i had just bought the pistol, turned to his friend who sold it to me and said, " why'd you sell it for? i was gonna buy it today!" purchase price: $279.95, with 2 17 rd. mags :)

I bought a Sig P226 off my brother who lost his job and needed money to pay the rent. I got for $400 with 5 hicap mags, 2 galco holsters. The gun was new when he bought it back in 1993 and I was present for all 500 rounds he ever fired thru it. I bought it back in '96 and he keeps asking me if I will sell it back to him. Sorry bro, still not for sale!

I made the thread asking if Sigs were overpriced; the two I bought have been the best deals in guns I've gotten. (Disclaimer; I'm in Canada where prices are a bit higher, so if they don't seem quite like deals, that may be why :) )

First one is a German made P220 9 millimeter with the traditional button mag release, two mags, original box and manual, cleaning kit, carrying case, 50 rounds of 9mm ammo. 650$. This gun's mint.

Second, a P226 ST in .40 S&W I got from a friend. He wanted 900 for it, but said "Buy it by the end of the month, 800."
Thing had 300 rounds through it and even after a couple hundred more from me, it's still insanely tight. He also installed an SRT on it.

I did buy a gun in which I feel I was mislead: I bought a Ruger 10/22 build for 450 bucks. The guy had put an ER Shaw bull barrel on it, and it was in a gray Boyd thumbhole stock. I paid him the money and he shipped it to me then said "Oh by the way, forgot to tell you, the stock is unfinished, hope that's not an issue."

Well, I'm too damn nice for my own good, because I wasn't pleased but I didn't give him a poor rating. He didn't say the stock WAS finished, in his defense, but if it's not it should be mentioned. Water under the bridge...

I found a guy who sanded it, smoothed it out and painted it candle apple red for 80 bucks cash, because I was a student. Now when I take it to the range, everybody asks about it! :)

A gunstore was advertising a "Winchester model 84 sporterized" for $500. When I saw the pic of it, I immediately called them up and had them put it on hold. It was a Winchester model 64 deluxe in 95% condition made in 1948.

I was just offered $1650 for it last week...

Love the thread... I could not make this up...best deal I had/will ever have- was done at Turner's in San Marcos- Private party-in 2005-I walked in after I paid for my college tuition at CSUSM- was looking for a Colt 1911 for approximately 2 years- lucky enough to have a guy getting rid of classic guns to purchase more modern Sigs and Hks. Turners was going to buy his guns straight up, but I was fortunate enough to have the sales people allow me to offer the seller some money for his guns. Ten days later (it was the longest 10 days I remember) I picked up...
(1) Series 70 Colt Government 70B serial number made in 1983?- 98% no box that I bought for $400 dollars.
(1) Series 70 Gold Cup Government-94%-no box that I bought for $400 dollars.
(1) Smith and Wesson 44 mag. 29-2 nickel 94% with a wooden box at 70% that I bought for $175 dollars.
...fortunate enough to have a salespeople that allowed me to have this deal. One girl- I believe her name was/is Amanda was one of the ones that helped me. Enjoy-sorry for the long post.

I just picked up a Norinco 1911 slide and frame for $100 and a USGI M1911 parts kit for $250.

The parts kit fits fine except the grip screw bushings. It came with a nice Remington Rand slide with some wear but no visible damage.

I've been told the slide is worth $200 or more. It's a project gun so if I can peen the frame rails and squeeze the Norinco slide for a nice fit, I'll sell the Remington Rand slide and maybe have a complete 1911 for ~$150, then I might try to sell the 80's chrome lined replacement barrel and fit a Cart match barrel for about $50 net.

The hammer might be a rare one so if it is, that might fund a match grade trigger setup.

Bottom line I might have an all forged 1911 with match barrel and trigger for less than $300.

A while back I purchased an M1 Garand parts kit for $200. At the time I didn't know what it was but it turns out that it's a Danish kit complete with a VAR barrel which is supposedly one of the best Garand barrels ever made. Then I bought a Winchester receiver for $180. It should make a nice shooter for cheap.

Lastly, I bought two .22s at auction, the two cheapest there. The first was a Remington 41p Target Master single shot for $80. The second was a Marlin 60 for $50 but it turns out that it's the rare model with the long barrel, 17 round tube magazine and last round bolt hold open, Marlin only made them for a year or two before shortening it to comply with the NJ magazine capacity law.

The Remington is worth at least $300 but I've seen a really beat up one sell for $320 and mine has a lot more of the original finish. It's stock isn't perfect but pretty good for a kids gun that's almost 80 years old.

I'm not sure how much the Marlin is worth but it's ~rarity can't hurt and it's a fun gun.

Traded a well used but decent condition Taurus 619 Stainless'

for a very good condition, all original Colt MKIV/Series '70 with about 100rds down the pipe and two original Colt hardballer mags with the straight feed lips.

The guy I traded with (a notorious tightwad) loves .357 wheel guns and said that he could never shoot straight with the .45 so into the safe it went...30 years ago. After the trade, I took it apart, cleaned 30yrs of dust out of it, drifted the rear sight back to where it should be and guess what? 2" groups at 25 yds.

He STILL thinks he got the better end of the deal. And I am not gonna dissuade him. :)

Cool story bro.

Lol good point. I think he meant something like tricking an old lady.

Here's a good one that I don't consider taking advantage. A guy was selling something I wanted, worth ~$16k. I met up with him, and he was being a d***. Acting like he was loaded and didn't care if he sold it or not. He kept telling me to make him an offer in a rude way so I said $6,000. He was PISSED and acted offended and butt hurt. So I raised the offer to $6,500 just to feel him out. He put on another show about how I'm lowballing him but I could tell that deep inside he would have taken it and he was just acting like an A-hole to get more money out of me. I pulled out $6500 and handed to him, he said no. I put another $300 on there and I could see that he wanted it but he kept acting tough. I told him if he doesnt take it, I'm leaving in 3 seconds. 2 seconds later he said "I'll take $7,000." $7k is a great deal I thought. But then I remembered how rude he was so I said no. $6800 is all he was going to get out of me and if he didn't like it he could wait and have people show up and waste his time and make him empty promises or he could just take the money I was offering him. He said he wouldn't take a penny under 69 and if I "didn't like it then tough s***." I said "if you want 69, call your girlfriend. I'm not giving you a penny more than 6800 my friend and if you don't take it I'm leaving. He took it :)

Moral of the story- If I call you "my friend," run lol

Can you do me a favor and point out the part in my post where I took advantage of him? As I said, he know it was worth more, but he wanted it gone and offered me a screaming deal which I accepted. I had already had the gun in my possesion for a little while because he asked me to hang on to it for him.

Sorry, I should have said MY Trooper is a Mark 3. I think I conveyed the wrong message to you.
I am aware of the difference between the early Trooper and the Mark 3. I know the Mark 3 is not nearly as valuable. I was just happy to give my Son a NIB Colt Revolver on his 21st B-Day, even if it was only a Mark 3. He shoots it and he loves it. He tells me it will never be sold.

When I lived in NY, I bought a 1966 PPK off someone for $50. He had it confiscated after leaving it unattended in his office and a cleaning laady shot it through the wall. Unfortunately, it had the cops initials scratched into the slide.

Recently, I picked this DS up for $500. But it came with 4 speed loaders and a Milt Sparks PMK holster that I sold on ebay for 160 bucks...so I think $340 for a no turn line DS isn't a bad deal...:)

The guy helping me was trying to talk me into a .45acp instead of 10mm. So we went to the 1911 cabinet and he pulls the Colt out...looks at the price tag and immediately puts it back and says 'you don't want a used gun...lets look at new' and pulled out a Springfield GI. I asked the price on the COlt and he said 299. I said I'll take it. I think he wanted to buy it for himself. None of the guys ringing it up could believe the price but they gave it to me. If I every get around to selling it, I am sure I will make a profit, even at $65 in 1965 dollars. Also bought a black-box Model 29, unfired, and was later offered more than I paid for just the black box. Missed on a few deals too, but for the most part have done ok.

A few years ago a friend of mine called and told me he knew a woman whos husband had died 2 years prior and left her and her grown children with a gun safe full of guns that she didn't want. She wanted help liquidating them. I agreed and being a gun nut knew how to legaly sell off the guns.
Upon inspection I found a German Luger, Sig .40, Colt 45acp, S&W 629, two AR type rifles, 1903 A3, Mauser 98, and a couple of other long guns I can't recall. The adult boys picked through the lot leaving the S&W, 03A3, mauser and the ARs. I helped her find a buyer for the S&W and helped her take the ARs to Nevada to sell as they were pre ban and not transferable except for maybe a familial transfer ( sons didn't want them).
Anyway a week or two passed and I get a call from her about the 03A3 and the Mauser, the last guns left. She wanted them gone, now...I told her I really wasen't interested, plus I had no money. She told me that because I helped her with the other guns if I gave her $200 I could have both. So I scrounged up the money and picked them up. Upon closer inspection I see that they both are in great all correct condition.
Then I get a call from her about some ammo. same deal $200 and she just wants it off the property ( did I mention she runs a daycare out of her house ) I go to pick it up and it is a load of ammo. Cases of 5.56 , .40 Hydra shok, 44 mag, .357, .380, 9mm, 38 sp, 22lr, 45 ACP, 12 ga and a bunch of Garand ammo in clips.
Then believe it or not she calls again wanting to get rid of the gun safe. I already have one and don't need another but she wanted it gone. So for another $200 I didn't have
I now have a new safe, two long guns to put in it, 6 cases and 10 ammo cans full of ammo.
She got what she wanted and though I wasn't looking for guns, ammo or a gun safe, I spent $600 I didn't have I got a smoken deal.

$200 for a pre lock 4" S&W 586 when i used to work in a gun shop in the 90's. I sold it last year for $600.

About 2 years ago, a buddy of mine wanted to know if i knew someone interested in buying his guns.
He decided one day that he just doesn't want them in the house anymore. He wanted $400 for a mint Sig P228 with less than 500 rounds through it.
I proceeded to tell him i might know someone that might want it for $350. He agreed on $350 and i then asked him if he'll take a check :D

Many years ago (Pre Ban) a gun shop I used to go to had a unfinished Walnut M1 Garand buttstock on the wall, I could see from the counter it had some beautiful Tiger stripe grain. I asked how much they wanted for it and was told $50. As I continued looking about the store I found a box with six Colt 20 round AR15 mags in it (all excellent cond). I suggested a deal for $50 for the stock and mags. The deal was done.
Later I was at a gun show looking for some matching handguards to complete the set and a dealer saw my stock and offered me $200 for it...Still have the stock and scored handguards. Had them on my Garand, sold the gun ,kept the stocks, to nice to let go.

I just bought a SA M1 Garand low 1 million serial number (made in 1943) rebarreled by SA 10-51 3 weeks ago :D. MW and TW were both around a 2 and the rifle is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! It was a korea war bring back with no import marks anywhere. Wood is in great condition no pitting what so ever on the rifle and the bore is clean and shiny. I couldnt be happier, and i only paid.....300 for it! :)

here are some pics of it

My Colt Single Action Army .357 bought in 1977 for $399.00. Colt Govt. Model MK IV also bought in 1977 for..............$399.00. Most recently I bought a pristine Colt Detective Special AND an equally pristine Browning Hi-Power both on consignment for just over $1200.00.
