If I separate my FAL for storage in California (remove the pivot pin) and store them in my safe as two different parts...ie front end and lower assembly do I still need to fix the mag? If so, then I'm exempt from all US made parts ect?

Thanks

922(r) is a federal law, and constructive possesion law applies.

As for the separating w/o a fixed mag, you could buy why? just use a mag release with a set screw if you're worried about a SHTF scenario.

My point is that I already have a fix mag FAL for personal use. I am building another and don't have the $ for the US parts right now. Also, I may want to switch uppers and have the option of just leaving my other fal in two parts.

Constructive possession doesn't apply to AWs, but you could be getting way close to the line.

The best thing would be to render it as a non-semiauto rifle by closing off the grenade launcher gas valve and removing the gas piston. Then features configurations don't count.

Store the gas piston outside the safe, some distance - garage, etc.

922(r) compliance is a separate issue. I'd really not have a lot of stuff together unless you had compliance parts affixed.

The required US parts can be done pretty cheap.

Entreprise makes US mag followers and bottom plates. (2 parts)

Penguin furniture (3 parts).

DSA furniture

The DSA or EAI receiver is one part (ask for the dealer discount)

You'll need to replace the muzzle device - that's one part.

That's 7 right there.

THen you can always get a US charging handle and or op rod just to be on the safe side.

Ot you can get a US HTS (3 parts).

I would also suggest getting a semi-auto safety - the FA safety is fun, since you can put it on "FA" (of course, it only shoots one round). BUT, some LEO might not understand that your rifle isn't *really* FA.

It's better to be legal - both with Cali laws and Fed laws - better to stay out of grey areas.

(drats, now I want to build another one!!!!!)
