It's not somewhat cheaper, it can be a lot cheaper. I always pay under $0.20/rd for 9mm shipped to my door. What is your price, including tax and gas to drive around the bay area looking for Walmarts that have ammo? Probably a lot more.

And the UPS guy is probably faster than waiting for the next gun show.

Walmart gets trucks a couple of times a day. They never know when items come. My neighbor is a manager, I thought I was being smooth and asked him what day ammo comes. Turns out no one knows.

well, online is really not THAT much better...In my local Big 5, a box of 45 acp is typically $26. Shipped to my house from sportsman's Guide, 45 ACP is roughly $23/box.

If you arent shooting enough to justify reloading, your doing it wrong.

Surplusammo.com also has excellent 9mm deals. $204 for 1k S&B 115gr. DELIVERED. I will check out freedomunitions for sure. Might be even better deals to be had.
Although I reload occassionally I must use factory ammunition. Some training facilities will not allow reloaded ammo on the range. I used to buy Wally-World out when you get 100 rounds for a mere $10.95....ah the good ol' days.

As for buying ammo from Wal-Mart, well there is your problem. When I used to buy ammo (I reload now) I experienced the same frustration as you.

Wal-Mart employees just don't care. Sometimes they have more ammo in the back. But it just isn't convenient for a minimum wage employee to (without being told) go to the back to get more and restock the shelf.

Also, there is a large demand for guns and ammunition right now. So when it is stocked up people buy it out. Part of the demand is from increased awareness and a surging popularity of shooting sports. Some of the demand is from cuts to police departments and people looking for home defense (though most of those types only buy a box or two of ammo). Another demographic is people in fear of Obama getting re-elected and trying to outlaw guns entirely.

GMANtt
02-21-2012, 8:04 AM
Not trying to defend Walmart or anything, as I hate them too. But I do not think they keep a stock in the back, too much shrink would result in that. Their orders are processed to fill the shelf. And after they're out they're out. Would you really want a minimum wage employee strolling around in the back with down time looking at bullets? I know I wouldn't and Walmart thinks the same way.

new1911
02-21-2012, 8:04 AM
socal still relatively stocked in the Inland Empire, although i must admit the stock is diminishing since 2011/2012. Maybe the imminent Middle East conflict and Obama is renewing 2008's ammo scarce/hoarding.

Actually that's exactly what the employee told me. Ammo shipments usually come at night but they stock them whenever they feel like it.

I like buying online too, but UPS is so sketchy and hit or miss around my area. For some reason heavy packages with the ORD sticker has often gone missing in the past. It's hit or miss on signature requirements. If its a good enough deal I deal with it, otherwise I just pick up a few cases at gun shows.

For the longest time my local Walmart never had any ammo, but the last few times they were fully stocked was amazed thought the ammo case was just for display only. But when I saw the pricing I said to myself I've gotten better deals online or in in the ammo section of these forums.

Plus the selection of what brands and specific grains etc is kind of lacking.

Case in point I bought two 500 round boxes or Federal 5.56 SS193 55 grain for 150 bucks each no tax.

While Walmart sales Federal .223 100 round value packs for 40 dollars each. So 500 rounds would be 200 plus tax. So it would be 66.50 more at Walmart and your getting a watered down load vs the hotter 5.56 Federal.

Or the 9mm Federal is the cheap walmart only crap, says not for duty use, looked it up says this reject stuff can have shards of the jacket come off when shooting but is safe for your gun. I can get the regular Federal for about the same price or cheaper online and not have to worry about that happening.

The only time Walmart is a deal is if your desperate and need ammo on the spot they will be better than your local dealer. Other than that stock up before hand so you don't have to make a ammo run before hitting the range.

I had to see for myself. I went to my usual Walmart.

.45 Federal and Winchester all sold out. Typically around $35 per 100 rounds. They had only one 250 box of Remington for $96 bucks. They had five before I showed up at 1PM. So I bought the last box. Counter guy said that they have been out for 3 weeks. They have orders into their distribution center, but the distribution centers have been out of stock.

They had a ton of 9mm and .40 in stock. They actually had overstock. Although, 9mm 100 box were sold out. They had 50 box, which amounts to $2 more per 100.

Walmart sucks anyways. I was talking to ammo counter maneger and he was telling me the amount of boxes they order for a super walmart in roseville, it was a joke like 4 to 8 boxes come in a day, of each popular caliber ( 9mm, .357, .223 and others)

I make larger internet orders. I havn't been back in over a year!

Thats why they never have ammo in stock. If your not the first or second when shipment arrives your out of luck.

Shawline, near Clairemont Mesa.

That one had 9mm and about everything else was cleaned out. When I went by the range it was out the door so it makes sense.

I went to Walmart in Milpitas today and bought some American Eagle .223's. The Clerk said a guy who owns a gun store bought 87 boxes. There are still some boxes left, but hurry before he goes back and buy them all!
I think it was $6.97/box
