I have 1 pistol and 2 rifles.
I am happy with my BHP, but loving a CZ SP-01.
I am happy with my .22lr rifle, made of Volquartsen pieces and very very accurate.

I have a Bushmaster Carbon 15 top loader. Will shoot it soon. Read some not so good reviews about this rifle, so it worries me.

I have $600 to spend, so...should I get a SP-01 or do something in the AR dept? I also have a stripped lower, so one option is to build it up and put the Carbon 15 upper on it or buy a complete DI upper or buy a complete rifle or..piston driven rifle or upper. I am really liking the piston though, but that $1000+.

Not looking for a tack driver, Use is range shooting, and HD/SD. Possible hunting with the rifle later.

Thanks for your opinions.

Dremel out the carbon lower so it can take mags...problem solved.

I think I would rather build a lower and swap the upper.

I have my eye set on a Robinson XCR..but that's $1700.

If you already have a stripped lower, try these guys. With $600 and your lower you have a complete rifle.

So you think the Carbon 15 upper is that bad that its better to buy a rifle kit or a complete upper? Just wondering here since, if the carbon 15 will work just fine, then I can set my eyes on something else, like the CZ or a piston rifle.

The PSA kit was just a cost effective suggestion to a decent AR. If you want another handgun go for it, if you really want a piston AR.... just be patient and save some more money. It all depends what route you really want to take. Shoot the carbon 15 for a while and then decide.

I like the dremel option. However if you want to hunt why not get a 30-30, 30-06, or 308? You can find used bolt and lever guns in the classifieds for half your price range then spend the other part on lower bits if you want.

How big of an animal can I hunt with a 6.8 and 7.39? Assuming I go with a XCR or LMT and change barrels?

6.8 is more than adequate for pigs.

'06 and 7mm mags can ruin a lot of meat - trust me

easily...some people hunt pigs with a .40sw (not my first choice, but whatever floats your boat!)

6.8 or x39 will take deer too...but you're gonna want to build a tack driver before you attempt it. Miss the vitals and it wont be a clean kill.

i'm not a fan of top loaders so i too suggest a different build, or the CZ. But since you do have a working upper, maybe you should buy the CZ and shoot your AR a bit to see how you like it. If you find that you don't, sell it and use the money to get something else. Piston systems just keep the bolt clean...run it wet and clean it after use and you wont have any problems with DI (plus you'll have money left over to buy ammo!!!)

Good advice. I would love to get a LMT MPR upper. Better save up.
