I am in the process of saving up money for a .308 in the coming months, and I want to know if there is anywhere that I can shoot within 2 hours (3 at most) from San Francisco that has a 300 meters or longer range for me to practice at. I've looked online, and competitions seem to be the only way to go besides BLM land. I really want to start shooting at steel plates, so anybody who knows please let me know.

After Google mapping for a little while, I found this ridge in the Hollister BLM between Panoche Hills and Tumey Hills that has that kind of range (coordinates: +36 35' 1.91", -120 41' 37.09"). Any advice?

Sac Valley might be a tab bit far for the op to shoot only 300 yards.

Yeah Circle S just outside of Petaluma would be the one I'd go for. Less than an hour from SF.

Circle S is about 90 mins and Sac Valley about 2 1/2hrs. All the local ranges have 200yd ranges so you may have to settle.

Okay thanks guys! I have never heard of Circle S before. That sounds perfect for me right now.

You guys mentioned Sac valley, too. I know that's not going to be my regular spot, but I would make a monthly/bi-monthly trip out there if they have ranges out there that go past 300.

If you guys know of any ranges that have 500+ yards in Sacramento, I would really like to know.

Once again, much thanks guys.

North Cow Mountain (http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/ukiah/cowmtn.html) (BLM) outside Ukiah has a 400 yard gong to shoot at. I always have a good time shooting there. Would probably take you about 2.5 hours to get there though.
Circle S is good for punching paper, but I like more variety in shooting. They don't allow rapid fire (one shot every 2 seconds) so shooting the semi shotgun is no fun and their handgun range is 15 yards. Not much fun for anything besides rifle, IMO.

Sac Valley goes out to 1k but you have to be a member of a club.
