View Full Version : So now that I have my AR, how do I carry it everywhere?

So now that I have an AR I am going to need a carrying case to take it to and from the firing range once a month. And maybe during the summer time take it out on camping trips. I want to try and stay within 100-150 dollar range or if possible lower then that. So what do you guys recommend, hard or soft case? Any brands that I should stay away from? What do ya'll think, thanks in advance.

Soft Voodoo case from captain dave's. They are great, rugged cases. They can carry two rifles and two pistols if you want them to and they have carry handles, shoulder sling straps, and backpack straps to carry it how ever you prefer. Oh, and did I mention you can get them for under $100?

I have been using mine to carry around my shotgun and rifle at 3-gun matches and as a makeshift rifle rest. I am not nice too it and it has held up just fine.

Uncle Mike's bags are pretty cheap. Amazon.com has a bunch of rifle bags for under $100.

Taylor Baby guitar case. It is big enough for a 3/4 size guitar. Holds a carbine just fine, and nobody even looks at it twice.

I bought the voodoo one that holds two rifle and two pistol with zipper lock. I think I bought it for $120.

I use ADG cases when I transport in my pickup. They are about $100.

I also have a Voodoo Tactical drag bag that I'm pretty happy with...about $160.

AR guys seem to like Pelicans. Maybe look at them.

So with the zipper lock, if I were to lock it and transport it in my car, that would be considered a locked container? I am still trying to read over all the legal babble about transporting AR's in my car.

LOL, as far as I know according to a worker from Turners. That should be fine.

I keep my Ruger 10/22 in a guitar gig bag. For my AR I am looking into buying one of those cheesy "Coffin Case" guitar cases and removing the internals to replace with foam.

putting it in your trunk is considered a locked case, but I recommend getting an actual bag like the ones recommended above, and pick up a small lock that can go through both zippers so it is not easy access to just remove your toys.

So this way, you can transport it in and out of your house discreetly also.

Just play by the rules, and you'll be safe.

ca says only concealable firearms need to be locked while in a gun free school zone. federal law says all firearms need to be locked up while in a gun free school zone.

if your car doesn't have fold down seats the trunk is good. 99% of all cars HAVE fold down seats where the lever to fold them down is NOT locked and anyone in the passenger compartment can access the firearms, so if LEO want to bust you then can.

The best firearm case is one that doesn't scream... "LOOK AT ME, I have a FIREARM!"

Most AR15s can be broken down and placed in a 20" backpack.

I read that a lot of the hard cases have complaints from the users that their rifle wobbles around in the case, which when you are transporting a scoped rifle, is very bad so I bought a vertical case for my new target rifle. Only $34.00 on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P3WPXM/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details

But since you have an AR15 type of rifle, this might be too big. The soft tactical bags are the most popular to carry an AR. Amazon has them pretty cheap.

Seconding this. Good cases, really durable, lots of space and pockets for mags, ammo, and tools.

In my opinion, for just one rifle, the $20 cases that go on sale at midway or amazon will get your rifle to the range and back perfectly fine. If you plan on carrying more than one rifle plus pistols, I'd jump on the voodoo or condor cases.

I just picked up one of these at turners for $60. I have to dissassemble the two halves to get it to fit since the case isnt long enough, but its light weight and has plenty of left over room for magazines and what not.

I go out to the desert a lot, so having a hard case is a big plus when youre putting 4 days worth of food/supplies/luggage on top of it.

Well, I had a $25 gift card for Sports Authority, so I just bought a hard Plano double rifle case and only had to pay a few bucks. So far, I am happy with the case, so I wouldn't hesitate to go with one of those if you are not wanting to spend a ton.

I've got two of those voodoo cases (a 42" and 36"). Love em. They perfectly fit pretty much everything I need when I go out, including my 20" cardboard tube that holds my paper targets in the large outside pouch.

+1 on the Castle Rock bag. I got one in royal blue, looks like a folding camping chair bag. The backpack straps free up my hands to carry ammo cans to the shooting range.

I have a voodoo soft bag but it looks like a gun bag and is readily identifiable as something that wouldn't really hold anything else...

if that's something you want then go with it, or get something non-descript.
