I'm going to check out a M1 Carbine later today. I've looked at a few. I know to check the barrel for and stock for overall condition. But to be honest I'm not sure what else to check for on a carbine. Any pointers out there would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks....

barrel bands- type 1 and 2 are more rare, type 3 is easily identifiable because it will have a bayonet lug attached, very common.

high wood v. low wood- this is referring to the wood of the stock around the operating rod. high wood (shown top) is desired.

rear sight- flip aperture is most desirable.

these are the most basic and obvious considerations.

Check the bore you can use a M2 ball round if you dont have a gauge. also look at the rifling

USGI or commercial? Avoid later Universal models like the plague.

Thanks for the insight.

The unit I'm looking at has a Quality Hardware receiver. It does not have a type 3 barrel band. Not sure what type it does have. It has a flip sight, good barrel rifling but the rifle is overall in fair shape.

I need to do more reading on these before I buy. Any good resources out there? (I sure miss surplusrifle.com)

Quality Hardware is USGI and good to go. Fair shape is also likely good considering it has the flip sights. Might indicate it never saw postwar refurbishment/upgrade. Are there peen marks along the rear sight dovetail that would hold in the flip sight? Unmolested originals did NOT have the peenings. Finish and wear level should also match rest of rifle. If not, it's likely a reproduction part.

Also look at the safety. Is it push button (like the pic of mine) or a flip lever?

Re: barrel bands, type 2 was posted above. With this kind you have to be careful in that some people have taken a Type 3 and cut off the bayonet lug extension. This would be visible if you look at the top from the bore end. you shouldn't see an extra piece of metal in there between the band and the barrel. Here's a pic of my original Inland with a Type 1 band for comparison.
