So I bought my friend's extra Spike's upper and lower in January. He was planning on building 2 AR's but decided to finish one and shift focus back to the Triumph Bonneville and the '72 Dodge Demon. After finding a local shop to do the DROS I picked up my lower, bought a CMMG lower parts kit and started watching assembly vids on youtube. I got the MOE trigger guard, the MOE handguard and the AFG from Magpul. I am doing this build on the cheap because I am currently also trying to finish my '73 Plymouth Duster's 408" Magnum R/T (Done but not in the car) and 5 speed swap. Following a guide we found on AR15.com we assembled our lowers. No lost parts, no idiot marks and the cussin' was kept to a minimum.

Parts so far:
Spike's lower (stripped)
Spike's upper (stripped)
CMMG lower parts kit
Magpul trigger guard
Magpul MOE carbine handguard
Magpul AFG
Magpul grip
ATI buffer assembly

I am attaching a pic. in the mean time I need to buy my Magpul CTR stock, a BCM charging handle and get the rest of the parts to finish my upper, or get a cheap Del-Ton upper to drop in and upgrade as time/money allow.

Good progress. Have you decided on a barrel or BCG?

Nice build so far.

Did you go with the standard CMMG LPK or two stage? How is the action on the trigger?

Thanks

Looking good so far! Got my Spikes upper yesterday. Waiting until the 21st to get my Spikes lower out of jail.

Standard CMMG. The trigger works, but since I haven't fired an AR15 before I really don't have a reference to compare mine to. It seems about the same as my buddy's lower. IIRC he used a DPMS lower kit.

It's... for my left hand? :p

Yes, but it was designed to better facilitate this type of grip/stance.

But hey, if it works for you then if works for you.

The build looks good so far.

Thanks... I bought because I have big hands and long fingers. I was checking out standard grips and I didn't like how they felt in my hand. Maybe I am just too used to guitar necks? I kept thinking "Man, I'm going to have to make my own lower grip using a big stupid bicycle handgrip or one of my Snap-On screwdriver handles!" before seeing the AFG and thinking "That looks cool."

If I don't like it on the carbine length rifle I can simply remove it and use it on something else.

I have one on a 13" rail and a 9" middie handguard.

I'd say it's not even meant for middie grips but it's ok.

I would think you'd have a really difficult time w/ it on a carbine length grip.

I really don't like carbine length handguards...
