I am planning on buying or building my first AR15 within the next month or two.

Any suggestions on which ones? Or builds?

budget around 2K. Mainly for hobby. Never owned an AR before. Shot a few different buddies AR15s but have not decide on which build or maker.

for 2k, there are more choices than you can imagine. I would likely go the ca legal colt route plus optics and ammo

first decide if you want a DI or piston gun

Decided on a piston gun.

How do you guys feel about the Sig 556? I shot one from a buddy and seem to really enjoy it.

Love my Bravo Company upper, which I paired with a spikes stripped lower. For 2K you can build a high quality AR and get a scope or optic for it.

if you're willing to spend around 2k buy a LWRC M6A2. best semi custom factory piston gun out there. they run about $2300 new, but you can find them on calguns for much less. or at least find their upper, and buy a complete or stripped lower to build the rifle.

plus keep in mind that piston designs are not standardized. if they stop making the gun you buy, it may become very difficult to find replacement parts for a damaged piston. and they do get damaged on occasion. LWRC however has enough government contracts that you can be sure theyre not gonna stop making them anytime soon.

i would also recommend any rifle or upper made by JP Enterprises, Noveske, Daniel Defense, LMT, BCM.

good luck and post your pics when youre done.

Go to the forum M4Carbine.net, and read all the guides they have there. Though that forum is geared towards certain applications with rifles, there is a lot to learn IMO. Lot's of knowledge. It might even change your mind about getting a piston AR and it will definitely change your mind about bothering with one of those Sig556s.

Then you can make up your mind on what your needs with the weapon are and take it from there.

for a first time AR15 buyer I wouldn't get a piston system. If a piston system is what you are looking for there are better options than the AR15 systems.

As for a $2K DI system AR15; range bench/ plinking/ small game hunting/ home defense, I would spend $1000 on a S&W M&P15OR (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_764994_-1_757913_757798_757797_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y) and $1000 on a Trijicon Accupoint TR-24 red chevron (http://www.trijicon.com/na_en/products/product3.php?pid=TR24).

if your budget is 2k, then why bother with a Sig 556? kinda doesn't make sense IMO. I have a Sig 556 Classic Swat and an LWRC M6A3 and they're two completely different machines. if it's your first AR, I'd go with a Colt 6920 and good glass.

Thanks for all the tips! Now time to read and compare!

+1 LWRC. It's accurate, bullet proof, and has very low maintenance. Cons are its expensive and proprietary parts.

But I agree for your first AR I would go with the Colt SP6920.
