I hope the heck they didn't pay good tax payer dollars for that crap! That is just about the worst looking logo for even a mom/pop business, let alone a government agency! Maybe it is an early April fools joke that got posted to soon.

A feel sorry for the rank and file that will have to work with that now. I just can't wait to see the new uniforms:eek:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BoF

BoF or BOF is an acronym for:

Basic Oxygen Furnace: This is a furnace used in steel production that removes oxygen from the iron ore and other substances.

Birds of a Feather: This idiom is a shortening of the proverb "Birds of a feather flock together.", meaning that people (birds) of the same kind or interest (of a common feather) enjoy spending time (flocking) together. This proverb is believed to date back as far as Greek and Roman times, but has become commonly used as jargon by various groups since the nineteenth century.

In the world of computing, BoF (Birds Of a Feather) can refer to:
An informal discussion group. Unlike Special Interest Groups or Working groups, BoFs are informal and often formed in an ad-hoc manner. The acronym is used by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to denote initial meetings of members interested in a particular issue.

A BoF session, an informal meet-up at conferences, where the attendees group together based on a shared interest and carry out discussions without any pre-planned agenda.

beginning of file, the computing term. See also end-of-file.
Body-on-frame, an automobile construction technique.
Breath of Fire, a video game series.
Baptism of Fire
Board of Finance
Battalions of Fear
The chemical formula of boron oxyfluoride.
Best of Five. A question format commonly used in medical exams such as Membership of the Royal College of Physicians
British Orienteering Federation

A government agency already has that acronym.

The BOF is the Calif Board of Forestry. http://www.bof.fire.ca.gov/

I agree that the new DOJ BOF name change is a waste of taxpayer money. I am sure lots of hours were wasted in this scheme and this s**t has got to stop.

What is even more of a hoax is the description of the division.

Since the DOJ will not provide citizen guidance regarding weapons and "it will be left up to the determination of the 58 DA's" crap have anything to do with, as quoted from the DOJ web page:

"The Bureau of Firearms serves the people of California through education, regulation, and enforcement actions regarding the manufacture, sales, ownership, safety training, and transfer of firearms. Bureau of Firearms staff will be leaders in providing firearms expertise and information to law enforcement, legislators, and the general public in a comprehensive program to promote legitimate and responsible firearms possession and use by California residents."

2. bof
A word with no real meaning (although it does stand for Band of Freaks)other than to attempt at making fun of the kids who have the balls to be different. People yell it from ten miles away or whisper it as they walk by in order to fit in, although they just end up looking like pathetic, ignorant sheep.

Some random guy: BOF! hides behind a group of friends
A cool BOF kid: Hey, thanks. laughs their *** off, proceeds to call another BOF a BOF, and continues to be the freak they are damn proud to be

I would have through it should be a......bolt gun - oh noes a sniper rifle;
or a pistol - oh noes too concealable,
a hunting shotgun - oh noes don't want to stir the enviros;
a AR-15 - oh noes it has a pistol grip and can be shot from the hip without reloading;
a AK-47 - oh OK.... the gun of communists and terrorists! Great choice DOJ !

Oh, and BTW, the real BOF - California Board of Forestry was the FIRST governmental board established in the NATION in 1885 -

Yes that is an 18.

Also notice that the AK is not following PC § 12276.1

(1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and
any one of the following:
(A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
(B) A thumbhole stock.
(C) A folding or telescoping stock.
(D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
(E) A flash suppressor.
(F) A forward pistol grip.

Things are changing at the group formerly known as DOJ AG Firearms Division...

-Gene

Choose the likely scenario:

1. They want to let us know they're still out there, active, and virile. Not a bit distracted by various CA cases (both settled and ongoing) and Assembly bills that have reversed, setback, or derailed their intentions. In spite of the fact they haven't really made a peep since late last year, they want everyone to know that they intend to do something serious about the fact almost a hundred thousand new firearms are legally being constructed in California using 'loophole assault weapon receivers' while the CA DOJ Firearms Bureau just sits there wondering what they hell they're going to do about it before the number of OLLs reaches a half million.

2. They want to make us think they're still out there, active and virile. That their experts and foot soldiers are operating under a coherent set of rules not at all in jeopardy of running aground in any of 58 DA's jurisdictions. In reality, the 'BOF' as it exists at the CA DOJ consists of a filing cabinet, three telephones, those five desks over there, and this big storage closet over here that they share with the CHP who uses their half to store extra highway flares. No-one cares very much over there anymore because anyone with brains and talent wants out of the red-headed stepchild BOF division. There have gotta be far more exciting and rewarding options in CA law enforcement than working for some sub-bureau started by a fat sloppy goof from the CA Progressives who wears dirty sneakers and slacks coated with cat fur, especially when that sub-bureau can't even keep it's legal policy straight from day to day. "What do we tell them when they call in today Bob?" "Hell, I dunno. Just say whatever."

3. Some dorky state employee with the CA job title of 'Webmaster IIa' made up the logo as part of his duties in providing a visual freshening-up of all California state bureau website logos as motioned for in a state spending bill which passed last Spring that no-one even noticed. Last week he just got around to the CA DOJ BOF division. Now he's already moved onto fixing up the Modoc County Registrar of Voters welcome page that has all those pesky broken links and outdated employee contact lists.

4. They really are ramping up the capability of their special section and this is just the first visible change aside from the thousands of blue windbreakers with yellow 'BOF' lettering on the backs that they're presently handing out to thousands of newly-deputized CA DOJ field agents. Right now, there hundreds of black GMC suburbans being painted with the new 'BOF' logo in readiness for their use by the CA DOJ in a final mass sweep on the residences of all purchasers of 'OLL' receivers in the state. They've arranged training with BATFE and US Army Delta Force out in the desert in a mock MOUT town practicing neighborhood raids while dark green UH-60Hs with chin FLIRs circle overhead radioing and data-streaming their progress back to Iggy's underground command bunker located deep under the state capitol. Expect a pre-arranged media event of a CA DOJ BOF swoop on a location holding hundreds of OLL receivers with AG Jerry Brown holding a 6:00pm Q&A session with the press on all local channels as the four-way split screen shows CA DOJ BOF agents swarming neighborhoods all over the state.

My personal choice is somewhere between #1 and #3.

Yep. It's, in the business term of the decade, been 'rationalized'.

Do they change their name every time a new Attorney General gets into office?

No. Guns are no longer a politically hot item. Senior legislators aren't even carrying gun bills, they're leaving the newbie freshman to throw out gun laws and take the heat. Management of a firearms organization thus is of reduced importance in the grand scheme of things. There are many other things the AG must concern himself with in the law enforcment arena including gambling control, narcotics control/CAMP, statewide parolee/violent felon apprehension, elder abuse/fraud, etc. As long as DROS system keeps working, that's really the only sign of life from DOJ other than Iggy missteps.

Do "Division" heads get paid less than "Bureau" heads or something?

Generally yes, all other things being equal. Remember, it used to be the firearms "unit" of BCIA. Even with a bit of growth due to some extra laws, it's still a small group.

It appears lack of competent adult supervision (or a director/manager in cruise-to-retirement-cuz-he-has-a-bad-hip mode) led to the recent FAL fiasco where the BoF forgot that they approved the DSA CaliFAL!

I'm even wondering if BoF staff will not be shared with other Bureaus/Units, and not exclusively used for fierarms duty. Perhaps Iggy may go on pot raids on CAMP, etc.

I am really surprised that as long as this thread is, nobody mentioned that backwards, the rifle looks like an i, so if you are the Peters Brothers (does that show my age?) and you look at it backward, you get:

FIB

Seriously, that is a lousy ugly logo - I am not saying that just because it is DOJ - it really is quite bad by design standards. I've seen better logos from people using general fonts and old Microsoft Word 97 free clip-art files. I can think of at least 2 or 3 kids under the age of 14 that could have created a more masterful design. Also, I too thought this was an April Fool's joke and went direct to the site to verify. But even then, I'm staring at it thinking "Bureau" what the hell? Weren't they Department? Division? Demento? D-something? Unbelievable.

Too funny. :D

If it is true, they are hypocrites:

-They AK47's are known as the weapon of choice for TERRORISTS and gang bangers. (I would use the logo of a m4/m16 instead)

-As mentioned the AK47's are 'banned' in the state.

-The use of high capacity magazines, which they banned.

I sent my e-mail to the tech guy and here is what I said, Man, what is going on up there? Please tell me someone hacked your site and that the new logo is some cruel joke. That thing is hideous. God I hope you weren't the one who designed it as you are going to probably now have a personal vendetta against me and now I will get audited twice a month. If you weren't the one who designed it, you have my sympathies.

He replied back and said he has nothing to do with the BOF (yes he did refer to them as the Bureau of Firearms) and just mainted their website. I joked back,LOL. Good times. Is there any formal way to complain I am offended my tax dollars are going towards that logo? LOL.

Then this is what the dirty dog did! I had forwarded your email to the Bureau of Firearms program. You can also send them an email of your complaint at http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/contact.php.Now I am guaranteed for an audit soon. I should have kept my mouth shut.

I am kind of offended by the new logo. Why have an illegal AK47 on your new logo? What is up with that?

Is there an exemption to the law that allows Feinstein to be in possession of a banned AW?

Clearly her holding the AK with her finger on the trigger shows possession? She's been photographed many a times being in possession of an AW. Are these hers and she has the required AW permits?

Those weapons are legally under the control of the DOJ or LEO agency and and Feinstein is under their direct supervision so it's OK.

It's the same as if my over-18-yr-old friend uses my registered AW at the range - perfectly legal.

I do know what 10% said is true. You can take your friends out with you and shoot your registered AW as long as you are there the whole time. (Don't know if you have to secure it while you run to the restroom though.)

The emphasis on AW's particularly in some retro cartoonish target ala Dick Tracy is rather disturbing! This is an agency that should emphasize safety and compliance rather then intimidation. I guess it's supposed to embody the comical and cartoonish quality of Ca gun laws. Bad choice in logo's, very bad!

NO NO NO NO NO.

Minors cannot be 'lent' a reg'd AW when in CA. Even if you, the registered owner, are standing over his shoulder, the law is pretty clear in 12280PC that this is lending to a minor. And in fact there's 'escalator' penalties for doing so.

There is no restriction on a minor shooting a regular rifle, which includes OLL-based firearms with compliant features suites.

If your kid wants to shoot your AW, take him on a trip to a free state like NV or AZ.

I agree.

However, if one was to take a more cynical outlook on things, one could say the new logo shows that the BOF guys think they are above "liberty and justice for all" by having it shown in such a shadowy view in the background and not upfront and on equal stance with the BOF label.

But I'll leave that intrepretation to others. I think they did OK with this new logo.
