View Full Version : Brady Campaign seems to "like" the idea of Gingrich as a varmint

First of all, I am aware that Facebook posts are fleeting and can disappear just as quickly as they appear. The content in question, however, can still be publicly viewed at the time of this Calguns post. Secondly, while analyzing Brady's social media may at first seem silly and trivial, I found this comment particularly appalling and worth sharing (link at end of post).

Yesterday, the Brady Campaign posted an item on their official Facebook page related to Mitt Romney's history on gun control. The link leads to a site run by Newt Gingrich's Campaign that addresses Romney's history and positions. Among other things, Romney's varmint hunting trips are discussed. It's not actually so much the link that is objectionable, as it is what happened in the commentary. In response to this story related to killing varmints (presumably with a firearm), a Facebook user by the name of Andrew Goddard chimed in with this comment;

"Does Gingrich count as a small Varment? I hope so!"

Apparently, he hopes that Newt Gingrich could be counted among the aforementioned varmints and therefore eligible for the same treatment; to be hunted down and shot. Given the context of the link that the Brady Campaign posted, there is really no other way to interpret it. What a vile and hateful sentiment. The most interesting part, however, is that this comment has received one Facebook "like". That "like" is from none other than the official Brady Campaign's official Facebook account. I'm amazed that their social team would publicly approve of such a wildly inappropriate comment, but there it is.

It's not OK to imply that a person should be hunted like a varmint. It's also not OK for a Washington lobbying group to approve of this type of thinking. I wonder what the Gingrich Campaign would have to say about this.

This is the direct link to the Facebook content in question;

This content will likely disappear from Facebook at some point. I am grabbing screen caps in anticipation of that eventuality.

Huh, I seem to remember the Brady Campaign thinking that Sarah Palin was to blame for Gabby Giffords being shot in the head, you know, because of the things Sarah Palin said. I snapped a screenshot just in case.

Lighten up, it has been said about almost every politician some one thinks they are rodents and should be shot. Hell around here it is tourist, "if there is a tourist season why can't we shoot them".

It certainly appears to be the same Andrew Goddard. Interesting behavior from a gun violence prevention advocate, no?

Me too! It should get posted somewhere, I'm thinking at Brady's untruths.

I take a lot of screenshots. Unfortunately there are a lot of whackos in the anti-gun movement, and sometimes their arbiters aren't able to censor all their whackoness. It's easy and fast. Everybody should do it! Information wants to be realized! We've got this amazing tool called the internetz, we should use it!

last year I went to living for 32, at the end there was a Q&A. I put out that there were a lot of young woman there, that they were most at risk and they should LTC. I know all of us know how that went over.

The thought of someone protecting Gods gift drives them nuts, but it's OK to shot someone if they are a "varmint".

I noticed that too! How fricken hilarious that the Brady Campaign TO PREVENT GUN VIOLENCE just "liked" a post that advocated using gun violence against a politician!

Image is too tiny.

m03 is right, it's way too small to read.

My source file is larger than that, but when I upload the attachment to Calguns, it scales to that size. How do I prevent this?

Stonewalker
02-09-2012, 9:33 PM
I just use the "Print Screen" key and then paste that into Microsoft Paint. Save it as a JPEG, it should upload just like mine did, because that's the process I use.

Mine was a png. I'll see if a jpeg exhibits the same behavior.

you could just upload it to image shack and link to it.

Saved as jpeg. That seems to prevent it from scaling.

Does anyone have a way to get the Gingrich Campaign's attention? It would be interesting to have someone over there have a look at it before the BC takes it down.

I wonder how he'd feel if someone had made that comment about his son with respect to the VT massacre? It seems HIGHLY insensitive for someone who is related to a victim of violence.

back peddle and spin...

Gun-nuts are so sensitive! Varmit is what Newt is (actually a little salamander type critter) and in the Republican "hunt" for the nomination, "hunting" a small vamit like Newt (an anti gun-control candidate) by a pro gun-control candidate is a good thing, so long as it is a figurative expression (which it is) and not a gun site target like Palin's, which became a literal expression of violence (Tucson).

It's not okay to use an image figuratively, but words....that is okay(unless you are pro gun).

It certainly appears to be the same Andrew Goddard. Interesting behavior from a gun violence prevention advocate, no?

Andrew Goddard is a completely unhinged nutball. I have real concerns about his stability. I think his stand on guns is the result of him projecting his violent fantasies onto others.

He's also the Chairman of the National Gun Victims Action Council. (http://gunvictimsaction.org/boards-of-directors/andrew-goddard-chairman-of-the-board/)*

It looks like Brady's Facebook admin is not going to back down on this one. Iím sure that Mr. Gingrich would be interested to know that a Washington lobbying group as large as the Brady Campaign regards him as a varmint (to be hunted). How very diplomatic.

I don't think yo want to go down this path. The dangerous violent crazies on Arfcom probably outnumber the dangerous violent crazies on the Brady's Facebook page by 50 to 1.

I think your right. Colin seems like a much smarter, more genuine and amiable fellow than his father. Interesting, considering he was the one who experienced horrific trauma, not his father.

UPDATE:

For what itís worth, I was able to reach a worker at Gingrichís campaign headquarters by phone. I let her know about Bradyís support for the hate speech and she was appalled. She asked me to provide a link (which I sent to an e-mail address she provided during the phone call) and told me that she is going to ďrun it up the flag poleĒ.

It may or may not amount to anything, but at least they have been made aware at some level.

Perhaps the Brady Bunch needs a primer about wildlife.
Varmint - any usually predatory wild animal considered undesirable; e.g., coyote

Newt-A small, slender-bodied amphibian (Notophthalmus, Taricha, and other genera, family Salamandridae) with lungs and a well-developed tail, usually involved in the sale of car insurance.
