Hello all

The following link is a speech given by Peter van Uhm the Dutch Chief of Defense about one of the roles of guns in current society. It is 17 minutes long but I feel it is a very good speech. Some might construe there is a slight over tone of an anti individual right to keep and bear arm's sentiment but I really don't feel that is the case. Please view and share your comments.

I also love the pro military comments.

Excelent point of view and did you notice the audience's rapped attention? Personally, I know nothing about the gun laws of the Netherlands but I would like to see what his and their point of view about private ownership of weapons are. I think that Switzerland gets it right.

What I get from this is………

A) He doesn’t like guns (which he stated)

B) I believe that he thinks only the Military should have guns “until the day comes we can do away with the gun” 15:32 into it.

C) To me this is about getting the funding for the new weapons. He mentions his father with an “old gun” numerous times and at about 15:49 he says “it takes good equipment……………… I hope you will support the efforts of our Armed Forces………….. and provide her with a good gun, instead of the bad gun my father was given.”

Overall the support the Military aspect was superb, but I believe that it has nothing to do with personal freedoms.

"state monopoly on violence" doesn't put him in the individual liberty camp in my book. But his topic would be an introduction to national self defense as a steeping stone for some hoplophobes.

One could always 'friend' him and find out:
