Buddy tells me he found a 30 30 Marlin, but doesn't know the model or anything. I'm trying to get a picture, or at least figure out how old it is, but he says he'd like $250 for it. Sound like a good price, everything else unknown? I have no experience with lever action rifles, though I've been wanting one.

Probably a Marlin 336. That'd be a fair price, even for the models that came with birch.

When Big 5 was stocking these; that was close to their ON SALE pricing.

Too bad they aren't anymore.
Trying to find a lever gun in .357/.44...Dicks is the cheapest so far at $529 for an 1894 in .44 mag

Yeah, he said its a Marlin 3000, and was flexible on the price. Maybe offer $200? A quick look around the interwebs shows these to be economy model 336's.

The only difference between the 336 and the 3000 is the wood; the 3000 will not have checkering but the guts should be the same. These were models made for places like K-Mart. $250 is good but if you can get it for $200 that is a great deal.
