would a .204 Ruger AR have to have BB?

it is NOT bigger than .22 cal, but it IS center-fire.

Hmmm, 5.45x39 is smaller than 22...

Yes, it needs a BB.

Self loading rifles that chamber fixed, centerfire ammunition are what's regulated. Caliber has nothing to do with it.

What he said. The distinction is rimfire vs centerfire.

I think you are confusing the multiple long gun reporting and the AW laws.

A .17 Remington AR would have to be BB'ed as well. Caliber has nothing to do with it (well, a .50BMG AR Rifle would be illegal with or without a BB).

Just because most rimfire happens to be .22lr, doesn't mean that .22 is the cutoff.

A .17HMR AR would also be fine without a bullet button. So would a .22 Magnum.

The key is rimfire vs centerfire, not the diameter of the chunk of lead

i think it is exempt from multiple long arm reportings for border states

I imagine the answer the op was looking for is the centerfire vs. rimfire, but you still may not need a bullet button. as long as your ar patterned rifle doesnt have any "evil" features, you dont need a bullet button. You really just have to follow the flow chart, it is pretty self explanatory.

No AR has to have a BB or any other type of magazine lock on it unless it has evil features. So, a .204 can be CA legal without the need for any type of mag lock.

(well, a .50BMG AR Rifle would be illegal with or without a BB).

Mine is legal.:p

I don't think "invent" would be the right word. "Develop" would probably make more sense. But, it's been talked about on calguns since before "OLL" was even an acromyn. The main problem is that rimfire rounds tend to be low pressure rounds. I think there is something about the soft brass on the rim of a rimfire case and how they can't handle the high pressures of modern day centerfire cartridges. But, I could be wrong about that.
