Just unboxed my new CMP service grade Garand and everything was looking good until I noticed the front sight was bent. Looking through the rear aperture, the front blade looks very thick. Do you think it can be fixed or should I just buy a replacement front sight?

I'm guessing that the sight block is moved over to the right all the way to compensate for the bend. I'm definitely having bad luck with rifle sights lately. This is the second rifle I've bought in a row with damaged sights(other one was a new Marlin with a crushed rear aperture.)

Other than that, and the oozing cosmo, this one seems to be in pretty nice shape. The barrel numbers look nice compared to what I was expecting, so that's a plus. I'll take some time this weekend and get it cleaned up so I can take it to the range and see how it shoots :)

CMP's customer service is first rate. Just call them about the front sight and they will send you a new one. Will not newly made, but a replacement one. My uncle has done this twice on damaged and incorrect parts.

Judging by the offset to the right, it looks as though it was zeroed to the left bend!
Just contact them and they will make it right. If you want a thinner blade, get the NM .072" front from Smith. I believe they are Kensight manufacture, and top rate.

CMP Customer Service is your friend. They will take care of you.

No worries.

Email instead of calling. The hold times can be crazy and they'll probably have you talk to an armorer anyway instead of the customer service lady. If you email they'll forward it and the right people will call you back if they think the phone's easier.

at least you got some USGI wood instead of the pumpkin color new production stocks.

As has been said on posts above, CMP CS is first rate and they will make it right. Email is best so CS can forward your email to Phil the lead armorer. They will probably send you an return shipping label to send the sight back.

Congratulation on a nice SG SA with nice USGI SA stock to match. Godd TE & MW numbers as well.

That is a nice looking Garand. After CMP sends you a new sight post about your experience on the CMP forum and watch peoples heads explode as they are convinced that the five minutes it took someone to send you a new part delayed their order by weeks. You could put that sight in a vise and bent it back straight and save yourself some time if you are so inclined.

I'd replace it with a thin blade NM front sight if it were my rifle...:)

Thanks all! I'll send them an email today requesting a replacement.

As far as the wood goes, I put a request in my paperwork for a matching walnut stock. Very happy I didn't get new wood. Sounds like people are very unhappy with those.

Nice rifle might even be better than my Service grade special. I mean I would have preferred original wood but then I would have had to buy a correct grade.
