1 -- We already have background checks. Lets improve it.

2 -- Full auto weapons have been illegal since 1936.

3 -- Gun safety? What does he think the NRA has been doing for DECADES?

One of these days . .. decades . . . centuries, it would be nice to see the Trib at least get it FACTUALLY right.

LAWFULLY-OWNED firearms have been verboten in Chicago since 1982. That's why there's been no gun crimes (or crime of ANY kind, really) there SINCE 1982. Why do you think so many people are moving to this socialist utopia of the midwest?!?!

I loved how he talked about JFK and the rifle being purchased mail order, like the 1968 GCA never happened! But, first he ignores the fact that Gifford's shooter was known psychotic, but, neither the police nor his school reported him to the right hospital so there would be a record!

Save for one counterpoint writer, the Chicago Trib is an outlet for news about Pink Unicorns, how well the Mayor is doing, rainbows, how fabulous Chicago is under "the machine", fairies, the Success of the Unions, etc.

The place *is* Utopia for the liberal. The Republican party is a joke and its demise a textbook exercise taken nationwide by Obama and his chronies to take the efforts of the party nationally.

Give him more credit. Except for implying that guns are for hunting only (forgetting that 2A now officially and explicitly includes self defense), he does attack what he calls "the left". Not long ago it would have been all about gun control - just recognizing that "the left" is an extremist position is a huge step forward in normalization of 2A. If a regular soccer mom reads this, she will read that "gun control is an extremist position". I call that positive reporting by the main stream media.

thank you for your well thought out post.
The strategy of such media elites is to appear reasonable . Probably even the dumbest person has an idea of RKBA , by acknowledging 2A ,the writer tricks the uneducated reader into his POV. (the Except part of your post)

A news story is not dog bites man ,but man bites dog .
saying they got it wrong again is not newsworthy.

Possibliy you should scour this anti rights rag for the next several years and find one article on any important topic they got right!

Title

i.e. ZERO CREDIBILE NEWSRAG finally gets story right after misleading readers since it's inception.

"This episode joins a long list of elections overturned and social movements derailed by men with guns, as in the shootings of Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley, Huey Long, Malcolm X, Medgar Evers, the Kennedy brothers, George Wallace, George Moscone, Harvey Milk andMartin Luther King Jr."

I'm sorry, but what public office, if any, were Malcom X, Medgar Evers, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. elected to?

Come on Bruce, you even quoted it. You do not have to be elected to public office to be the leader of a 'social movement'. When we do this we're no better than the other side when they do it too. :TFH:

errrrrrrrrrrr sarcasim sometimes does not work .
Guess I was trying to be funny with - it's news if a man bites a dog --because it's not expected -as opposed to "Dog bites man" which is expected .

The title CT gets it wrong again ---is like Dog bites man ..
It would be unusual to get an accurate fair story from this rag!

Anyway thank you for posting , I enjoyed reading it

It's too bad, because Leonard Pitts is a great columnist most of the time. I love most of his columns. Too bad he doesn't know that Jared Lee Loughner was background-checked--and passed. Too bad he doesn't know that since 1986, fully automatic firearms have been effectively illegal unless you have $20,000 to blow.

But he does shine through by candidly admitting that there are still people on the left who keep trying to ban firearms.
