I was interested in one of these for my Custom II. I have to get all new mags or put large pads on them right? I use Chip's 8 round stars. Any suggestions or reviews on said product?

Do you compete with your kimber? Otherwise, I d get something more slim and compact. Especially if you ever plan on holstering it. Check out ed browns magwell. I have one and I m pretty happy with it.

Not for Comp. just thought it would be easier to reload in the dark with a Magwell. I use a Safariland 586 so there's no issue with holstering nor would there be with most holsters I think.

According to that page:

You can also modify your existing mags and basepads to fit the new DP Ice Insert.

I do not have the 1911 magwell, but I do have the DP ICE for a Glock 35 and it works very well. As SGGear stated it is wide. If it is a carry gun I would look at a slimmer magwell. If it is a HD gun and is only in a safe, I don't see an issue. The bigger the magwell funnel , the easier/faster it is to load in my opinion.

Gotcha thanks for the replies.... My magazines do have holes for base pads so guess i could just slap em on them. Looks like those are a winner then.

Thats the wrong magwell. You need the one with gap to fit your mags. The no gap requires special baseplates. Its actually only the insert that is different between the two.

I have a couple of these magwells and they are top notch.

This one will fit standard mags. http://www.dawsonprecision.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=80000A70-1254851326

Great thanks ...so what's the differance between the gap and no gap then?

If you look at the pictures closely you will be able to see that there is a small opening in the top of the gapped magwell. This is to let the baseplate for standard mags seat. The no gap magwell is closed up but requires special baseplates. I went with the gap magwells because if Im shooting a competition and have to borrow a mag it will work in my gun.
