UPDATE: CLOSED, List of members to be refunded is on page 22, post #852.

Hey guys, and a few gals,

Okay, I am making the "2012 Crate O' Mosin's Gun Run" official. I will be heading out to J&G Sales on Saturday, March 3rd.

This GB will be for Round Receiver Russian Mosin-Nagant M1891/30. (C&R, CASH & CARRY)
Comes with bayonet, ammo pouches, and the usual accessories. "Arsenal refinished in very good to excellent condition." - J&G

Here's what you need to know as follows...

- RULES / REQUIREMENTS FOR DIBS:

1. You are not a prohibited person. This will be Cash & Carry (or ship). No 03 or 01 FFL needed.
2. PM me with your request, if you need it shipped, and your info: (Full name, address, phone#, CDL#)
3. (a) Deposit for at least 50% of total MUST be made to reserve your selection. Full Crates must pay in full.
(b.) Full deposit is preferred and appreciated, but required at pick-up or in order to ship.
(c.) Acceptable forms of payment are cash, US Postal Money Orders, other money orders...in that order.
(d.) Payments must be post marked by Wednesday, February 22nd.
4. Items must be picked up in Carlsbad, North San Diego County, 92010. Pick-up appointments can be made starting Monday, March 5th.
5. There are exceptions to every rule, but only on a case by case basis. (PM me.)

Keep in mind the term "Group Buy" is a relative term. I am buying as many crates as I can afford at the time. This is to better my personal collection. This is a chance for adventure, and to do something most people can't to better their collection. Understand you are placing "Dibs" on leftovers of what I won't be keeping. This is no different than buying several packs of baseball cards with the intent of increasing my chances to get certain MVP's, and trading the rest to my friends. The purpose of paying up front isn't to help me buy more crates. It's to secure your dibs. Money talks and deposits show commitment.

~ J&G said they don't have a reliable supply of hex. Currently they have ten so that's what I am assuming I will buy. I will buy as many hex as they have on hand.

Check the weather!
I made a road trip to J & G in late November and had to turn around due to so much fresh snow on the roads. You go thru some nice mountains on the way to Prescott.
Or at least, bring chains.

My Super Duty is a 4x4 and I have chains. Thanks for the heads up though.

If you were to be a backup driver that might work well for some of the NorCal folks for pick-up.

Also, go easy on the hex's guys. They have 10 in stock right now, and there's no guarantee that will be the case in 5 weeks. I'm going to say that 5 for sure should get them, but the bottom 5 need to be okay with getting a round.

I've always wondered how this is not considered multiple straw purchases? Since you are collecting money in advance and purchasing rifles with your license with the intent of selling them, it just seems like it would be hard to explain it any other way. Am I missing something here?

Very good price on the full crate Expertish.

When I got mine from Aim, it was 1400... + 250 freight shipping... and I don't have an ffl, so had to do some negotiations not be pay out the nose from my ffl. Total cost to me was about 1900, not including the time it took up to do the 10 day wait and make 2 separate trips to the ffl and back.

1800 is a smoking deal if they only need to visit you once to pick them up. If I had mroe money... I just might think about a second crate :D

My understanding is that a straw purchase is when the intent is to purchase a firearm for a person who is normally prohibited. First and foremost, I'm buying all the rifles myself for the betterment of my collection, and intend on taking exactly what I want for the benefit of my collection. I will be keeping as many as I deem necessary. I just know that there will be many leftovers of what I don't want or need, and I'm asking people to give dibs on what they most interested in.

I personally have money enough to buy several crates, or will once my tax return comes in. Hence why I'm making the trip 5-weeks from now. I just think it's wise to collect money up front so I'm not left with an arsenal for a long period of time. I obviously don't want to run afoul of the law so if someone disagrees and has legal knowledge to back it up then please say so. However, say it HERE (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=485043&page=3). I'd like to keep this thread for people interested and as clean as possible now that it's in the FS forum.

I apologise if this is not an appropriate post for this thread, but I am interested in a few of these and I am wondering what the quality is of these crate mosins? Have they all been headspace checked, is there a chance of getting a real turd out of this or will they all be decent or better? I figured this is pertinant to those interested in this, thats why I posted it. Thanks, Grant.

Mosins were dipped in their cosmo bath and put in crates after being re-arsenaled by the Soviets. Now, it's entirely possible (I suppose), that after their proper Soviet re-arsenaling and packing into the crates, that whatever country stored them took them out, screwed with them to no end, shot them a whole bunch, and put them back into storage without re-arsenaling again... I just find it unlikely.

FWIW, my crate from Aim came with probably the closest thing to mint condition Mosins I have ever seen. No rings around the bolt face. Bright bore (bright as it could be, they are still filled with cosmoline), basically new looking. You can be pretty confident that when these were crated, it was done shortly after being gone over for the final time by the Soviets so they could be stored in working order. They didn't really want to waste their time crating and preserving guns that would have problems if they were ever unpackaged...

Any place online that has been selling crated Mosins (Aim, Classic Arms etc.) always has them listed in Very Good to Excellent condition. That is what a Crated Mosin should be.

I'm going to say Monday the week of will be the latest for you procrastinators. Being that this is a Group-Buy-That-Isn't, I can probably even accommodate a few people after the fact.

All my ride-alongs are filled, but looking for two alternates in case someone can't come through.

I'm really interested in this but I don't know anything about Mosins....I take it the Hex receivers are the more desirable ones?

There's a quirky aspect of the law which is that long guns older than 50 years old are good for private party transfer within California.

Oh, and I'm less sure about this bit, but I believe the hex ones were older, pre-WW II, and made with more care. As you might imagine Russia was really cranking them out by the end...

We'll just have to see what the stock is like when we get up there. I'm hoping they have more than the 10 they have now. Catching up on the PM's at the moment. I have 12 unread at the moment and making a roster. Bear with me if I haven't gotten back to you. Around what year would you say these mosins were manufactured experttish?
Most of these are going to be WWII era so 41-44 will be most common. Rounds were first made in 1935.

Okay, NO MORE HEX requests. The list is already full, and there are many in the pipeline. I'm planning on purchasing the 10 they have already, but no guarantee what so ever they'll have more by the time the trip comes around.

I've also been getting a few "newb" questions pertaining to cash and carry. These guns are C&R and over 50 years old. CA has no laws in effect yet that require registration of long guns (AB 809 isn't in effect yet), and their age exempt them from needing to go through a dealer and having them DROS'ed.

Also, if you're sending money through a "discreet" method put your log-in name ONLY!!! I don't need some nerd in San Jose with his finger on the "freeze account" button coming down on me because you put "7.62x54R" in the message box.

Not a lawyer, but I do follow how enforcement tends to work as is reported in the media, and as is reported by the enforcers and prosecutors.

The enforcers and prosecutors tend to look beyond strict legality and more at intent or outcomes.

What defines an online retail sale of guns compared to a private collector buying for personal collection?

What is your intent? What is the real practice and outcome of your actions?

Okay, lets start from the bottom up.

The real practical outcome for my actions is to gain some rare Mosin-Nagants for my personal collection, and have an adventure in the process. Normally it's not practical to do this other than pay an extra $30 for a place like J&G to rummage through a crate and pick the "best" and ship it to you. If you show up in person they tend to get annoyed letting someone nitpick through their storage room for hours on end. This happened to a recent collector. What I am simply doing is buying the crates myself, thus allowing to to pick out what I want at my pleasure, and sell the rest. Granted it's on a large scale, but there's nothing by ATF or J&G's policies that dictate how much I can buy at one time. They do make you sign a affidavit as an 03FFL that you will not resell for profit.

What defines as an online retail sale is when you have a website dedicated for such or post an ad in the For Sale forum asking the fair market price here in California. For a standard M-N that's been averaging $120. It's fair to say that any retail business is in it to make a profit or you're just wasting your time. ATF specifies that I cannot sell with the intent to profit. I'm selling the guns for $15 above J&G's asking price and paying for the wood crates myself. I'm asking $5 above their price for the spam can.

As of right now I'm looking at spending a weekend away from my family, driving 14 hours at a minimum, and am currently spending on average 5 hours a day behind the computer processing requests, responding to IM's, and meeting with members. This doesn't even take into account all the packaging, trips to FedEx, and time spent boxing rifles. Also, I'll be having to make appointments to meet various members at different times through the days for who knows how many weeks. From a business perspective, for time spent, inventory cost, and overhead, it's fair to say I'm losing money in this venture. This is a labor of love so to speak. I appreciate your concern though.

All in all, I'm sure Kest and the Librarian have seen this thread by now and wouldn't stand for it if there was a blatant violation.

Expanding your personal collection as a C&R licensee is perfectly legal. It is even legal to make a profit if he so desires as long as the main intent was to expand his own personal collection.

If he was a dealer he wouldnt care about picking out rare and/or interesting ones to keep for his personal collection. He would just sell them all for a profit, including the rare/interesting ones for an even higher asking price.

The only real worry about all of this is having the "agricultural inspectors" freak out when you do make it back to the california border. That is going to be the most exciting part of the trip I think :p

I think the problem is just getting them. The supply is running out so it's more of a matter of taking what you can get.

I'm going to be calling this one at the 8 crates until further notice. I'll keep a wait list for those still interested if I can open it up again with another crate or two, or as people change their minds.

Okay, got some good news, and some bad news from J&G. First the good.

Hex's - They might have some. Just waiting for their master grader to come back from vacation in 2 weeks.

Rounds - There's plenty to go a-around so I will be reopening with a few more to reserve tomorrow. However...

Tax - Yeah, they didn't tell me about this till today. I am suppose to pay AZ sales tax on everything I buy. I didn't know this. I'm talking to the manager I initially spoke to last week to see if there is a way around it. If anyone else knows PM me. Otherwise there will be a pending price change for all NEW requests. More to follow tomorrow. Also, too many to PM so check your name on the list to see who's payment I received today.

TheExpertish

Okay, so the good news is the Buy is open again, yesssss.

Bad news is prices had to go up. J&G is raising their prices $10 effective this Friday. Not surprising since they seem to be the last to do so. Everyone else already did. Also, there is no way around paying the lovely 9.35% state sales tax. Only good news there is it's still cheaper than shipping. Regardless, I had to raise the prices $20 to keep on top of things. This will only apply to new requests which include those on the waiting list. In good conscience I don't want to ask anyone who has already paid to fork over more money.

Will that bump anyone on the waiting list up to a Hex receiver?

Meeting with the fellow drivers at Ty's went great. Great burgers, and even a Calgun's discount. Also went and shot a few rounds at Iron Sights with my 1943 Tula 91/30. This is going to be good. Thanks to those that showed.

It's my wedding anniversary today so I may not get back to PM's. Will get back to work tomorrow. As of now still no Tula's and I think the ammo is all spoken for as well.

Im just about to drop full payment on my first Mosin but I'd like some knowledge from the fellow socal owners or anyone else willing to help. The Mosin seems to be a good rifle at a great price for a beginner like myself although after doing some research on ammo. It seems all surrounding ranges require non steel ammo and most ive found is surplus ammo with steel (im aware of the magnet test) my question is, where do you guys enjoy shooting the Mosin if you use the steel surplus ammo or where do you find non steel 'range approved' ammo. Thanks..

There is a difference between steel CASINGS and steel JACKETS or steel BULLETS.

Steel-cased ammo is perfectly fine at almost any range (except some indoor ranges where they recycle the brass and are too lazy to separate the steel) and the magnet test is looking for a magnetic BULLET. Not all steel-cased ammo uses a steel-jacketed bullet. Lots of it uses standard copper-jacketed lead bullets.

Just so you know, until Jan 1st, 2014 it's legal in California to transfer long guns over 50 years old between California residents without going through a dealer. Until that same date if you have a curio & relic license you can transfer similar firearms from out of state, which is how they're getting into California in the first place. You have to be a little careful to avoid being accused of being a dealer or collector but it's definitely allowed to sell some of them in the course of collecting (example: you have duplicates). This is part of why there's some discussion that he's cherry picking the more collectible ones out of each crate and passing on the more typical ones at around his cost.

unfortunately most so cal ranges do require the magnet test. The surplus stuff will not pass the magnet test. However you can order non steel ammo

Thanks for the input guys. Seems like the reasonable price of the Mosin might outweigh the high price of ammo that has no steel. As for the steel casing, i believe the range informed me they do the magnet test and nothing must be metal. This is going to be a tough one now,.

I have a few Mosin's and let me tell you for $100 you are getting a hell of a gun. In ten years you will be kicking yourself for not buying a crate ala Expertish since these bad boys will only become more and more rare.

Yes brass ammo is a little bit ridiculous, but non brass ammo is stupidly cheap. If you can find an outdoor range (which their are quite a few) that allows you to shoot steel you will be extremely extremely happy...

Also most ranges that throw a hissy fit over steel are indoors. Why would you shoot at a 25 meter target when your Mosin can shoot out to 100 Meters easily... Man at 25 meters you might as well fix bayonent and javelin the target.

Where are you located in So Cal? Maybe I can suggest to you a few outdoor ranges that you can use...

Thanks for trying to help me out.. Im in the central Los Angeles area. I called my two local ranges and both were a no go. As a matter of fact they completely refused to even let me bring in my own ammo for any rifle. I MUST purchase their ammo and thsecond one had same policy and didnt even carry the 762x54r. Believe me I understand what a great value and fun this rifle can be, unfortunately it wont be any good if i cant fire it. The best thing that seems like a possibility is Burro Canyon range i spoke with someone and they dont mind casing as long as the actual round has no steel. Its now just a matter to find some at a good price and stock up, hopefully..

Quit *****footing around and JUST DO IT!

DO IT.

DO IT NOW.

You know you want to. Stop looking for excuses as to why you shouldn't buy one, and JUST DO IT.

For $115, you really can't go wrong!

You will eventually find a way to make it out onto BLM land and enjoy it.

You can shoot surplus at burro.

Any range that makes you use their ammo only is whack... I've never heard of that before but then again I'm in sd.

Ask around to tag along with a la shoot at blm land you may be surprised how close they may be to you.

Okay, so today is the last day you can get your payment in the mail and be on the list for sure. I think Tuesday next week I'm pulling all names that are still listed SPF.

As far as Hex's go, waiting to hear back from J&G. As everyone can see the waiting list is still long. I know some of you want to upgrade so let me know and I will add you to the list. At the time of pick-up you can opt to upgrade and pay the difference if there are some available.

Also, many have been asking when they can pick up. Starting Monday the 5th I'll make myself available to meet. Best times will be between 8am-2pm, and after 5pm on weekdays. Weekends are open as well pending I have nothing going on with the fam. Same times apply if you are trying to meet with me to give me money.

Okay, list updated and has been purged. I am almost positive that I deleted someone on accident. Please check. Also, good news is I have been able to secure 2 full crates of hex which pleases me greatly. I'll be going down the list and giving preference to those on the list. Should be plenty for everyone on it. If you're not on it there likely won't be any left over between what I will keep and what has been requested.

Also, I have been getting PM's about empty crates, and it is very likely that I will have some. Preference goes to those who already put down deposits for guns. If you're not part of this and want one, PM me again and I'll make a waiting list for those. I'll be asking $50 per empty wood crate. Makes a great coffee table and conversation piece.

It was anti-climatic... Funny story but really nothing special. I'll let the expertish tell this one.

Yeah, as we rolled up the lady was chatting with her friend and clearly wanted to get back to her conversation. So, she does a double take at seeing the load, and with a very confused face asks, "What's in those?"
"Russian surplus", I replied. She gave a nod of approval with a 'thumbs up', and said to go right ahead. It was a bit disappointing not getting detained, but probably for the best.
