400 rounds isn't enough to worry about. If you make it to a zombie shoot, you'll want at least that per rifle per day. Just order another case and come out to the zombie shoot.

Are those $8 K-31 clips worth it?

Personally, I've never used one. I can top load my rifle, without removing the mag, just fine.

"Now listen up. I am about to explain something to you that is very, very important.

Suppose you are 50 years old. With a little luck you may live to be 65. That is with a little luck. If you are one of those unfortunate schmoes who die of a heart attack or cancer, you could drop in your tracks at a much younger age.

But suppose you live to be 65. That means you have 15 years left. And let us suppose that you go to the range twice a month. You have 25 shooting days every year. And this means that you may have only 375 shooting experiences left in your life.

Because your life is so fleeting and because each day at the range is so precious, you need the right rifle. You simply can't afford to waste your precious life and time on a cheap rifle. It is simply a sin. And that's why I get so angry at firearms manufacturers that use cheap parts. Not only are they stealing from you in an economic sense, but they are wasting your valuable life.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that everyone can afford a surplus Swiss K-31. These rifles are so beautifully and lovingly manufactured. When you take one of these to the range, you will feel wealthy. You will feel special; you will feel happy and the world will be young again. You deserve a perfect rifle and trust me the K-31 is a perfect rifle....

The quality of your life depends on it. Now you have a choice--you can listen to me and buy a K-31. Or you can choose to languish in squalor and schmoehood.

Everytime I see my K-31, I feel happy and I know that there's a brighter shooting day tomorrow.

Brighten your shooting horizons. Get a K-31. Do it today and don't delay."

You should sign up for the secret zombie shoot, it is a blast. There is no location listed because it is secret, not far from Barstow. Directions are sent by PM a little bit before the shoot,.

I hear you there, I showed my 16 yr old daughter how to use stripper clips and she would load them while we were setting targets and blow through them during each round of shooting. She went through over a half spam can at the last zombie shoot.

The very first military shoot I went to years ago I took my K31. I felt like an amateur as I was the "only" person shooting surplus ammo there. Everyone else was shooting their custom handloads.

With the K31 and GP-11 I placed 4th in the 200yd match with iron sights. I missed 3rd by 1 point(there was a 3 way tie for 3rd place so if I had gotten another point it would have been a 4 way tie).

During the match many shooters came by to admire the K31(I was lucky enough to get one with a walnut stock that wasn't too beat up and it looked beautiful after some sanding and 3 coats of hand rubbed tung oil).

After the match one of the regulars that I had outscored(he was shooting an 03 Springfield) asked me jokingly to please not bring that rifle back to the next shoot. :)

Um, you appear to be in a basement or garage rather than a shooting range?

Bench rests are for zeroing in a rifle. Or letting new shooters practice aiming & trigger control. Beyond that, and with service rifles especially, y'all better be burning up your ammo practicing your offhand, kneeling, sitting, and prone.

Maybe you should know that is how you shoot a wood stocked rifle off hand (standing). It helps insure proper placement of the stock in the shoulder pocket.

It's not an AR with a pistol grip.

I'd also wager a fair amount of money that she has LOTS more experience shooting a Swiss rifle than you do :)

Gonna change your user name? ;)

Had the K31 sights been mounted higher so I didn't kink my chicken neck, and shot it w/o the sling clip digging into my cheek, then...I like the Service Rifles, but feel like they should be shot as they were issued. I have different modern rifles for different shooting games & customized them for me. But I love shooting stock Service rifles. Pretend I'm an old solder. So the M1917 is my favorite bolt gun & probably the Garand my favorite semi-auto.

I love History & find the threads about all the old guns, foreign & domestic fascinating. I think it's pretty cool we have Members like Latigo & 1911sr to give us better insight on the K31.

I'll take that as a compliment, I feel like Ive been carded buying beer again.

Is that a Lyman or some other brand?

If Lyman, what is the model? I'm thinking those are 1/4 min sights, right?

On that set-up, what is the max on elevation? What about windage? Is the rear sight set-up high enough so that it does not get in the way of the rear sight ladder?

For the sight globe, did you all use the existing front sight base?

Thanks

OSO, that is a very very old Williams system. She got that long before we developed our current Diopter system.
Hers setup is 1/4moa clicks and I think she has an easy 20moa elevation. The windage is about the same.

It is in the way of the issue rear sight. That rear sight on a 1911sr is calibrated to begin at 300 meters with the issue front sight. Different size replacements are available still so you can get a 100 yard starting point..

The sight globe (Tunnel) is Williams as well and is silver soldered in place.
We still have all of the original parts.

We still have all of the original parts.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/zfk3155/1911001.jpg

Approx. how much higher does the Globe sight sit compared to stock sights?
Don't think those would be legal in the Military Matches, but sure would make it easy for old eyes to shoot.

Latigo
01-24-2012, 3:29 AM
Nearly the same height Bruce. Those sights are definitely not legal for sanctioned shoots. She uses them for local milsurp open, non-scoped matches.
She has her own k31 (or three ) she uses "as issued". If she removes the gantry she's able to step up the rear issue sight a bit and use it with the front tunnel sight.
"Tunnel" is the Swiss word of what that front sight is.

If anyone is in or around Orange, CA; Gunslinger auctions has two(so far that I've found) K31's for bid. They both look real nice, wish I had my tax return already/didn't have work

They have internet bidders(that can bid before the day of the auction) and live auctioneers. The first one is at $200 and the second is at $160

It's cool. At this point, I've lost track on how many gun fora I'm on. I'm on everything from an Italian one to M4carbine.net.

As for me, you gotta understand that the accuracy of the karabiner was the final selling point. It had better shoot more precisely than my No.4 Enfield. :oji:

How much is AIM?

I keep seeing GP-11 in J&G sales adds from shot gun news, $259.92 per 480... they are closer than the rest so shipping might be a little better.

I found a little more than 100 pieces of brass at a gun show for $17 and have been rolling my own getting great results with both of my K-31's.

I have my eye on another K-31 but they want a little much for it, I keep offering what I think is fair so sooner or later they will take it or tell me to shut up...LOL It has a real dark stock with tiger stripes, I have only see 1 or 2 pics with stripes, are they rare that way?

AIM is $4.95 a box if you buy a case of 480 (48 boxes). Roughly .50 cents a round.

Just saw one of these in the gun store(stockade) for $450, it looked like it had been in every war since WW2. Still, I've been wanting one of these badly. They're going to start going up in price at some point I think.

Latigo
02-08-2012, 4:54 AM
They definitely will. The only very important things to check are the bolt and bolt sleeve and the lands/grooves. Its very unusual to find any Swiss rifle with a marginal bore..... unless.... unless it was owned by an American for a long time. Americans like all kinds of solvents and even solvents with ammonia in them. They seem to overclean rifles for no real good reason.
Go up to the main thread and read the section about grease. Read about how these rifles made since 1896 (and earlier types) were maintained and have kept the pristine bores for which they're known. Hoppes wasn't around back then. :D

rojocorsa
02-08-2012, 6:01 AM
I noticed the bore of mine had very very small sized pitting in the grooves, but it's hard to tell its there.

I'm assuming this is just because the gun has been around for a while. The reality is that the rifling is strong and shiny (not surprisingly the best milsurp bore I have), and you can kind of even make out where the rifling ends at the crown.

Of my 2 K31s and 2 M39s, the better m39 is the most accurate. Actually it is the best of my many military rifles (except the M1A Match). The Swiss are great but that one M39 is a 24 guage brad driver. Butt - there is always something that is better than what I have - waiting out there to be found.

PS - I was not impressed with my Classic Arms K31. It had rust on the trigger guard and the rest had been wire brushed off, leaving a 50% blue, at best. The stock was just OK the barrel is more used but shoots fine. My Simpson Ltd is a true 95% blue, good stock, excellent barrel and has a Fuerter sight. It was 110$ more but I would get the Simpson 100 out of 100 times again, even if the price difference was greater. The Classic Arms did not equal its laudatory advertising and is a significantly used firearm.

hmmm maybe you should talk to lord Latigo maybe he can give you some fixer uppers or some better places to get a K31. I got mine through a PPT here on CG and man I couldn't been happier.

Even at Ammo brothers I checked out their k31's and they are in good shape. Rifling, barrel, trigger and wood looked good. Should give that a look and hopefully you will get SWISS FLU! :)

I don't know about that because I never shot a Swede Mauser before but I must say I was totally blown away by the k31 and its accuracy. I mean I shot a lot of bolts for a young buck like me and thought Mausers were supreme however the k31 took them all to school. I was hooked.

I mean I was hitting steel at 600 yards iron sights with it and it was sooo smooth and accurate. Me and blitz going to do some real k31 shooting today and I will take some video and photos to see how accurate it is.

I am sure herr Latigo has some really good photos or data on how accurate these are. Of course he does! he is Latigo!

Latigo- In your opinion, what's a reasonable price for a ZFK55? I'm seeing quite a range for rifles that are in roughly the same condition. I'm thinking about possibly picking one up this year and your input would be very helpful. There are two on Gunbroker.com right now, $3,599 to $4,800. The more expensive one has a modern, low-light, scope included in addition to the original. I know there weren't a bunch made, I'm assuming there's not a lot of them in the States. Thanks again for all your help.
