:p

I tell ya' I was expecting a beast of a time....she went in with litterally NO fitting issues. After all the bad-write ups on 'em I thought I was in for hell. That DPMS syn stock was 10000 times harder to fit that this beast; nice & snug lockup..

Hey HPS...where did you get your forearm metal insert "crimper" to tighten down the handguard metal???????

The color looks great on that. Did you finish it yourself or was it pre-finished? I've recently been told I will soon have a refinishing project of a Garand stock and would like to get some finish ideas. I figure if all else fails, 10-12 coats of BLO will do the trick.

Even if it is a Boyd's she looks real purdy in those new shoes!

Thank you. She is quite red- but definitely growing on me. Ok;
Started with
CMP 'regular' unfinished stock.
NO sanding, NO fitting (I was surprised...as it is a boyds/CMP)
Wipe down with Mineral spirits,Dry.
1.5-2 coats of Chestnut Ridge Stain- with addtional rub down with Denautured alcohol on the staining cloth AFTER the stain was applied to *hopefully* drive the stain deeper> Dry
Continous Wipe downs with TEAK OIL @100% (I usually use Tung, but wanted to try the TEAK...supposedly more durable & drives deeper...) for about an hour; wipe on, let sit for 3-5 minutes, add more oil to the rag (BTW- SAME rag as used with the stain and denatured alcohol) and re-wipe; repeat for an hour. Let sit for an hour. Complete clean/wipedown with fresh/clean rag. Second coat of TEAK~ much the same as the first but let sit longer...about 10 minutes per addtional wipe&extra oil. Let sit for about 2.5 hours. Wipe down with fresh rag.
Let dry overnight.
Assemble.

Still debating on whether another coat of TEAK...as well as addtional debate as to whether to add a poly coat................. only time and my finikey ways will tell............

Speaking of stocks... lookie what showed up in the mail yesterday. The good news is that they were CHEAP and NICE. I'm waiting for Wenig's to get back to me on a price for similar handguards.

^ You should pick up a pint of Tung oil from Woodcraft. I think there's a store in the south bay, but I do know there's one on the penninsula. It's not the polymerized stuff that's either boiled or with added chemical driers. It takes a while to dry, but your patience is rewarded.

The grain on your stocks deserve nothing less.

There's a place up in Mountain View called the Sawdust shop that carries PTO.

Dunno about the south bay, but there is a Woodcraft in Dublin they have a nice selection of finishes including PTO. On the same note, there is also a Rockler Woodworking in Pleasant Hill. (Both of these places cost me almost as much as a gun shop :( )

I bought them off of a guy over on www.thehighroad.com. The wavey looking one is about 1/8" too short between the ferrule and the receiver--I'm going to have to epoxy the ferrule on to compensate for it. I'm guessing they're seconds from Wenig?? The dimensions on the other one are fine, but it needs a lot more sanding.

Seconds or not....them's are sweet- I look forward to future pics....and are you going to use some 'stakes' on the wood to hols the epoxy for strength:confused:

Yes, I'm thinking about setting some pins (brads or maybe drill bits) in there to beef it up.
