If you remember my incomplete M1 Garand I got from my grandpa I am now continuing to complete it.

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg823/scaled.php?server=823&filename=img20110723190459.jpg&res=medium

I went to check on my grandpa today and he started talking about my cousin's friend stealing his match 308 ammo can last time he was over. So I told him I'll check everything and he started to give some 30.06 to me. I got a large handful of 8 round clips with 30.06 still loaded and a 30.06 spam can.

He finally remember where the rest of the garand parts are and I'll pick that up next weekend.

warning, don't store food in it. :43:

that was the baby spam can, he has one of 7.62x51 that is 2 feet long, 2 feet high and 1 foot wide. bunch of other 30.06 spam cans that were double the size of what i got.

Be careful with AP... some of that stuff is corrosive. I recall seeing a list online documenting LOTs and stating which is corrosive or none.

If you do shoot it, just make sure you clean it up good. Hate to have the chamber/barrel pitted on your new project.

I have my grandpa's M1917, it either needs a different bolt or the barrel set back as the head space is a little loose but I'll never let it go. My brother still shoots the over/under that grandpa got him for trap and we hope to inherit his Winchester model 12 that dad has now. That is a gift that you will always remember, give it to your grand kids one day.

If you shoot that ammo, save that brass. Its boxer primed and good for at least 2 reloads once you remove the crimp. That lake city stuff is annealed at the neck but harder than most commercial brass at the case head. It was designed to hold up in the M1.

The OPs can is good to go. For LC AP M2 ammo, everything from April 1952 Lot 13158 and up is non corrosive.

Looks like the butt plate, the rear sight tore apart and recoil spring.

Nice man you need to get that thing put together.

Going back to grandpa's in 2 weeks, rest of the parts were throw in the garage by my aunts. They just don't care for his stuff.

Wanted to break it down today, seems the trigger guard is frozen shut. I pulled it out multiple times before and never had a problem before, I lubed it up. I'll try again in a hour.

wrap it in an old tee shirt and tap it gently with a non marring mallet, helps the solvents and stuff get in there and break it free... On really stubborn stuff you can even soak the tee shirt and wrap it up overnight... Be sure not to use anything that will mess up the furniture...

Put a screw driver in one of the small holes and was able to pull it off with better leverage. Now the screw driver is stuck.

^^ Looks like you have your safety. That thing with a hole in it inside the trigger guard needs to be pushed forward.

Stock looks really nice. One of the guys I shoot with at Chabot has a 'Nutmeg' laminate stock on his M1...I think they look great.

Flip your sling around before people start laughing.;)

I've never seen a web sling set up like that. The buckle is usually in the rear so you can loosen it, put your arm through and then cinch it down by simply pulling on the sling. The adjustor should be towards the muzzle.

Agreed. Set it up with the loop to put your arm through on the bottom with the clip in the loop. Then you just disconnect it from the real sling swivel and you're good to go
