I was just looking at a sks and it looks like a russion, but no its a chineese. anybody seen one before?

China didn't start making SKS rifles until 1956 and the Soviets only had prototypes in 1944, so an SKS with a "44" model number seems odd.
Are you sure it isn't the Chinese factory code you are looking at? I don't think there is even a Chinese factory code of "44", but some of their code stampings might look close to that.

I believe that some of the early Chinese SKSs were made on Soviet machinery with Soviet advisors.
ETA: From wikipedia "Type 56 carbines with serial numbers below 9,000,000 have the Russian-style blade-type folding bayonet, while those 9,000,000 and higher have a "spike" type folding bayonet."
