Can anyone tell me for sure whether or not you need to transport a black powder handgun in a locked container? Assuming they do view it as a concealable firearm, given the fact that you do not register them, would that mean that you would be looking at a felony? I had always thought that since you could purchase one at 18 and since you do not need to register them, that they would be classified differently. Due to reenactments I have been doing, I have been traveling with them quite a bit lately and passing through some non gun friendly areas so I wanted to make sure. thanks.

I kinda want to know to cause muzzel loaders arnt considered firearms, no backround check and are cash and carry. Ive got several cap and ball revolvers and always treat them as a long arm when transporting

In California a black powder gun with ball, powder and cap is considered a firearm.
If one carried the black powder handgun with no caps it would be legal.

Do the caps have to be on the nipples or is it a problem if it is just in the same container? In the past when I have gone to reenactments, I have thrown my 1860 Colt Navy (cap and ball revolver) in the same bag that my costume and props are in. There is usually powder and caps in a pocket in the bag but never any balls even in my truck. Our group is very strict about not having any real ammo at any of the gigs.
