View Full Version : Handgun Safe for Vehicle

Can anyone recommend a quality and fairly inexpensive handgun safe with a cable to put in a vehicle? I've been looking online, but most safes look cheap and the cables look really thin and not very secure.

I wonder if I could put in something like an eye-bolt and add a chain to beef it up?

Was looking at the biometric safes, looks cool, but reading the reviews it doesn't sound like they are worth the money. Maybe an electronic or combo, just so I don't have to go fumbling around for a key.

Anybody that can break into your car will likely have the tools to cut a simple cable or would just rip the cable out of whatever you have it attached to. I'd personally just hide the safe somewhere so the thief doesn't know it's there.

I have three Gun Vault NV300's. They are combo lock, and have a small steel cable to tethering to the bed or a D ring in the bed of my truck (I sleep in my camper shell). The other nice thing is its a locked container so i can carry my pistol around in a backpack and have quick access. (I keep it unloaded with loaded mags in the safe next to gun.)

If I was so inclined I could probably rip the safe off the cable without much fuss. Its going to stop a smash and grab, but like always, if someone wants it, they will find a way. I keep it out of sight, and have also removed all of the stickers regarding guns from the truck. Just not worth it anymore.

I have flirted with the idea of mounting it to the back of one of my seats, or bolting it under the seat, what would make it really tough to put any force on it and get it to move. The cable that goes in the side is only held in by thin metal and as I said, I think I could rip it right out. the NV300 has two holes in the bottom, I have thought about bolting it down then stripping the nuts.

Center of Mass work well. Biometric is not perfected so well yet. Key works best.

If someone steals your car there is nothing to keep them out of any safe.

These are not a storage device - just a lock box.

I was looking at that style of box, am I correct in thinking the box only locks when the cable is inserted?

My idea with the eye bolt and the chain was to drill a hole into the box, or someone mentioned earlier some have holes in the bottom already, bolt through the box so the eyelet is on the outside, then padlock a chain through. Seems like something like that would add a little more than the cable. Even have both chain and cable, just something a little extra.

I had a bicycle stolen once, let a friend borrow it and they didn't use my u-lock and cable properly, just used the cable. Snip.

Yikes, should have posted all this one thread up on the Sticky! Oops.

Anyway, I think I found what I was looking for: http://www.response-tech.com/

Not sure if you're going to find "quality" with "inexpensive." Remember what you are trying to keep secure. Here are some other options that might work well if you have a truck/suv:
