It's my understanding that there are various methods of attaching a 10 round mag to an AR15 (type) lower that is a OLL.

There is apparently a company in Orange County that has a DOJ letter that allows it to (weld \ apoxie \ glue) a 10 round mag into a OLL and make it CA legal. Definately on the 'safe' side of the legal scale when it comes to exposure or scrutiny from a LEO. And of course there is, on the other side of the scale, the mag release button, that, with a 'tool', allows you to attach a 10 round mag to your OLL (aparently) legal as well (even though in the minds of some people, it is a gray area).

My question is, what is in between? Is there a method of attachment of the 10 rounds mag to a OLL that, if stopped by LEO, you do not have to bring out a binder of information and educate them? In otherwords, is there a method of attachment that is one step down from welding \ apoxing your mag into your OLL? And does this alternative attachement menthod(s) allow you to reverse the procedure without effecting the lower receiver in the event the law is ever overturned?

Last question.....if you buy a OLL, but do not attach 'anything' to it, what exposure you you have with DOJ (if any)? Are there any 'letters' from DOJ that you can wave in front of LEO in case it is discovered by them?

TIA

There's a lot of helpful info touching on your questions, do a search and start reading and understanding if you truly want to own a OLL and stay out of trouble, otherwise stick to SU-16s and Mini-14s.

There are no companies that I know of that weld OLLs, the ones you may be referring to are welding banned receivers with a DOJ letter of approval.

A method of fixing the 10 round mag that doesn't involve welding, epoxy or the use of a tool????

I'm not sure what you are asking for exists.

Or, are you asking about the Prince50(set-screw in mag button) or Sporting Conversions Kit(basically a hex nut and bolt) both which involve breaking the action open to load.

If you build a featureless OLL that accepts detachable mags you can take a copy of the SB-23 law of semi-auto firearms banned by generic features and point out to the LEO that your firearm does not fit that criteria. Or, you can just not consent to a search unless there is probable cause or a search warrant.

This has all been covered, and you'll want to spend some time reading the forums, especially what BWiesse and a few others have to say on the subject.

That said, Bushmaster on their carbon 15 model drills a small screw into the front of the mag to hold the mag in place. That is one option in combination with a fixed mag release.

An OLL that has the trigger assembly, pistol grip, and stock attached is generally considered to be illegal. A bare OLL is not iillegal (obviously). You can always go gripless or the "monster man grip" and run a detachable mag - be sure to keep the flash supressor and other evil stuff off...
