A family member from out of state sent me an email and asked me if I wanted to buy one of his rifles. He did not give any real info and he did not know much about it (it was his father's whos passed away) It appears to be a FN os some type. I assume it can be made CA legal by pinning the mag? I'm really not familiar with these so I figured I'd ask the pro's. What is it exactly, is it any good, and what is a fair price for it? Thanks.

That is a FAL type weapon. The FN Sporter is on the list but I cannot see the CAI Sporter, which you appear to have, on the list. With a ten round magazine made non-detachable that is a California legal rifle. The modification must be done outside of California or the upper receiver should be separate from the lower. On FALs, the upper receiver is considered the firearm and it looks as though the muzzle has no device so there is no evil flashider on it. I believe JPGlee has a FAL magazine locking device available for purchase.

From the above pictures, this has an Imbel receiver, too - in addition to the Century Arms International markings.

It is NOT an FN manufactured gun and therefore is not a banned FN FAL. These guns were even sold in CA up to

It is thus not banned by name and could be legally configured to be CA legal.

I would offer a few cautions:

- Many Century rifles seem to have acquired a reputation for near-unsafe headspacing, aside from "Gunsmithing by Dremel". Their Garand rebuilds are particularly worrisome in the headspace area. Have a gunsmith check it out before firing. These guns were not known as quality guns, and many people that have these get another FAL parts kit and have them built from the ground up again. Even at the peak of the rush before the 2000 CA ban set in, these rifles were $600 max (retail). You never know, you could luck out with a good gun though.

- Changing from thumbhole stock to other stock, etc. may trigger Fed 922(r) compliance issues, so you may have to play the 10-or-less-key-foreign-parts game and get 6 or 7 US "compliance parts".

- Don't have the 20rd magazines sent into CA. Have whoeever's sending it to your CA FFL send the serialized barreled upper receiver to the FFL separately from the lower/stock. [Unlike an AR15, the upper is the controlled/regulated part on a FAL-type rifle.]

What you have there is a century kit gun made with an L1A1 kit and an imbel upper. It has an inch folding charging handle but may not have the receiver relief cut for it, and also it looks like it takes metric mags. You can remove the thumbhole stock, fix the max and use an inch pistol grip again, or you can just fill in the hole so it's not a "thumbhole" any more and use detachable mags. The imbel receiver by itself is worth 400 bucks if it is in decent shape. You could always break it down an build and imbel on imbel with one of the available imbel kits.

CAi FALS do not have a great reputation, although some of them do work well. I would buy it in the realm of $400-500 ($500 if you really must have it).

The CAI (Century FAL Builds like the one pictured) are a risky purchase.

Quite a few people that I know who have owned them complained of shoddy workmanship/assembly. The only real plus is the Imbel mfg. receiver.

If you really really want it, then that is your call.

Thanks for your help. I may be able to pick it up cheaper than 400$. Maybe I'll do that and flip it to get some more AR15 OLL's.

At $500 I'd leap on it. If the gun runs, it will continue to run. That's your first question. She's a VERY early CAI/Brit frankenfal. $500 is the current going rate. I think you'll enjoy .308 v. another AR.:D

PM me if you're selling her...;)
