View Full Version : AR 9MM Help!

I'm attempting to build my first AR 9mm. I live in the middle of suburbia and the nearest outdoor range to shoot 223 is about an hour away. That said, the only thing that the indoor ranges will let us shoot is handgun caliber rifles. I'm fairly new to rifles in general but I just wanted the AR gods in this sub take a look at my upcoming purchases.

Lower:

For the lower I'm pretty sure I'm going with a CMMG lower complete (http://grabagun.com/cmmg-lower-complete-9mm-w-6-pos.html). This will save me the trouble of getting an add on magwell block for a regular 223 lower.

Upper:

Going with a RRA Mid 9mm Upper. (http://www.riflegear.com/p-394-rra-9mm-a4-mid-length-upper.aspx)

I'm assuming that's all I need for the body...what I'm really having trouble with is finding mags that are under $50. All I'm seeing is RRA mags which run from $50-$60 from what I'm finding.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Good luck with CP mags, they are like a lottery: http://www.calegalmags.com/AR15-9MM_c_86.html

If you ask me, get an Olympic instead.

That's what I originally wanted, but I'm not a fan of the non-detachable carry handle. Thanks for the mag link, this will definitely save me some money.

I'm currently building my 9mm AR. I have the lower completed, just waiting on the upper (CMMG). No cash. Holidays, priorities, and all that nonsense.

I personally went with a CMMG dedicated lower. I didn't want to worry about magazine well blocks/adaptors, and several Calgunners recommended that set up.

As far as 9mm magazines go, good luck. I've been trying to track some down, but they are pricey. 9mmar.com has a poll on which magazines are the best overall. Here are the results:

What is the best overall 9mm AR-15 Magazine?
CProducts(3) 8%
Modified UZI(7) 19%
ProMag(4) 11%
MetalForm(22) 61%

36 total votes since 11/28/11

Keep in mind, C- Products was taken over by A.S.C. LLC. They supposedly use the same machining equipment too. Decent price too.

Just an FYI. Hope this helps.

Good to know there's another person out there doing the same thing. Question about the uzi mags. Are these hard to block to 10rd?

There are a lot of people building 9mm ARs. Do a search on here, and you'll find a thread with some great info ad beautiful rifles. Search "handgun caliber rifles" and it should pop up.

As far as blocking mags, I'm not too sure. I'm sure someone on here will know though.

I would recommend the Spike's or CMMG upper over the RRA.

http://www.riflegear.com/p-1306-spikes-tactical-9mm-m4-upper.aspx

The RRA upper does not have a ramped bolt and you will need to switch to a 9mm hammer. With the ramped bolt, you can use a standard trigger. Also, you may have issues using the RRA upper on the CMMG dedicated lower. If you do decide to go with the RRA, just use a standard lower with the magazine block and the 9mm hammer to avoid cycling issues.

The best mags I recommend lately are the 20 round MetalForm magazines blocked with a rivet to 10 rounds.

I have a 9mm upper on a A/W lower.I have the block that goes into the lower and the 9mm hammer.I use converted UZI mags, factory Colt mags . Some people have problems with c/p mags and with promags. I have heard good stories about metalform. The rumour is that they make Colt mags.Mine is a 16 inch standard flat top upper .I have a Aimpoint red dot on a cantilver mount. They are a blast at the indoor ranges and out door ranges. My 12 year old son and 14 year old daughter like to shoot it.

Thanks for the info. I was actually really looking into the Spikes, but it's considerably more than a RRA and based on my understanding, the only real upside is that you can use a standard 223 hammer.

I know you guys had completes for sale some time ago, are those back in stock?

I just built one with a CMMG lower. Ive heard all the drama with the adapters so I just went with a lower that 9mm was meant for. I havent had ONE FTF. Its a blast to shoot and cheap too!

I have the exact configuration you're talking about. CMMG dedicated lower and RRA mid (there's no gas, so carbine, mid, etc actually means nothing) upper.

Anyways, the only thing that I've tuned is the bolt stop. I pulled it from the lower and removed about a 1/16"\1mm worth of material from the backside and re-applied some bluing. What this does is allow the bolt stop to ride higher and catch the bolt more reliably.

I use C Products mags with no issues, but I've also modified them slightly. I carve out a little bit of the follower with a sanding wheel on a dremel at low speed so the followers ride higher in the magazine (it allows clearance for the feed lip) and function reliably on the last round. I also mill off about 1/8" of material from the legs to make it easier to load them.

With these modifications my AR-9MM runs as reliable as a swiss clock :)

Do you have more details or pics of where and how you removed the material on the back of the bolt stop.

I'm planning on putting the same set up together after the holidays, I'm pretty confident with minor smithing like this, just need to see it in more detail, like your mag fix.

Thanks BTW, I found your previous similar post on this subject before.

I have and Olympic on a Registered lower that has a mag adaptor so it can use unmodified Sten Mags. Sten mags a buit like a dump truck and when I bought them they were $8.00 each. I have 3, I wish I would have bought 10!

Looks like Olympic make thier own mags now.

The beauty of the Oly upper is it works on a 223 lower, no special lower parts neeed.

I've have the upper for about 7 years and it runs great with any ammo.

As long as you have a 9mm hammer, you really don't need the bolt ramped.

There's really nothing to it. Unfortunately I don't have a picture, but I'll make one up in a couple hours if you don't mind waiting :)

The pro mags from 9mmar.com worked fine for me. I prefer the magwell conversion block for versatility.

I bought a few new 10 rnd C-Products magazines for $10.95 each. I had to do little work on them in order to get them to function properly. After I worked on them, they function flawlessly.

http://shop.lcjwholesalestore.com/10-Round-9mm-Magazine-10-Round-9mm.htm

Forgot to mention that if you go the C-Products route, try to buy the ones with the orange follower. I've been told that the orange follower mags are good to go and don't require any rework
