M955? Just a guess.

Oh wait, you said available. probably M855 or some custom reloaded rounds.

Not much out there AP for 5.56 for civilian use.

I've never seen any in person myself.

m855 is the steel core "penetrator" round. But as stated by other threads its only designed to penetrate a steel infantry helment. Not some 550 brinel tempered plate steel. You simply need something moving as fast with more mass behind it. Heres a link backing up what I just said.

Here's a video from the same guy showing what the round can do and what it was designed to do.

the ATF saw it fit to remove the stuff from their list of "armor piercing" rounds making it OK for use in AR pistols. that tells me it's not going to cut it if you want max penetration

Havent tried it on 1/2", but SS109's go through 1/4" like a hot knife through butter.

FYI SS109 is what NATO calls it - M855 is what US military calls it. - SAME ROUND

I shot some PMC green tips (M855 basically) at a 1/3" thick steel plate from about 40 feet away and they went right through. Some Federal XM193 rounds from the same distance put "craters" about halfway into the metal.
