Way to much stuff out there to pick from so will instead pick the brains of you rifle guys. Looking for a quality one piece scope mount for a Model 700 in .308. Don't mind paying for quality but don't want to waste money on a name if something else serves the purpose. Recommendation for rings for the VR II I intend mount would also be appriciated.

How quality? That's a lot of implied dollar signs.

I went with a Badger Ordnance (http://badgerordnance.com/base/) for my 700 LTR and never had a complaint.

If you're looking to get into long range shooting, you may want to look into a base with a certain degree of cant.

JD,
The California Precision Rifle Club has a list (http://www.caprc.com/builder) that outlines what they consider to be good/better/best for rifles/mounts/rings/scopes.
You may have to register to see the list. I use a weaver one piece mount, but I will not be shooting out a long ways, and I am cheap.

The EGW on my rifle has been more than solid....for about 50 bucks.

First time I've seen that spread sheet; pretty darn cool.

Why not a weaver 1 piece? Thats all thats on mine with a set of Leupold PRW rings and a bushnell 10x40. No complaints here...

That spread sheet will not open for me.

I will not be shooting at much more then 200 yards at the most. I simply want a mount and rings that will hold. I like the Leupold rings and need to look at what the PRW means. I am of course the Guru of the Remington Shotgun and even Certified on the 700P but don't know squat about most rifle stuff. The prices for mounts and rings is frightening so getting the right set for the right price is important. Also, I don't sell my guns so they need to last the rest of my life.

JD,

It all depends on how much you wanna spend. I know that the Badger Ordnance base and rings are probably the best. I personally use the Leupold Mark IV base and rings on my 700P. The rings and base will cost you around $200 for either the Badger or Leupold.

Only 200 yds with that rifle? I have a 700P. I mounted a Vortex Viper:
http://www.amazon.com/Vortex-Viper-6-5-20x44-Riflescope-Reticle/dp/B002SCV3BS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323834433&sr=8-1

It hits 800 yds all day at Angeles. A Nikon Monarch will work too but the Viper, I think, is a better scope. I used Leupold std rings abd two piece mount. The whole setup can be had for <$500 and it's super quality for the 200/400 yd range.

I've always heard that you shouldn't mix steel rings with an aluminum base and vice-versa. The only exception on the CAPRC list is the configuration for the 5r ... interesting.

I just got an SPS Tactical as an early xmas gift to myself. I use a nightforce 20moa short action base with burris medium XT rings. Haven't even shot the thing yet... hoping to take it out this weekend :)

I got the NF base from Optics Planet for $114 and free shipping.

Thanks for the input guys. I decided to go with the Tally mounts since the ring is part of the mount. I decided this since the main use of the rifle is Hunting and some range fun. I liked the idea of the ring being intergrated as part of mount as that is one less thing to loosen up under stress. I can also say the guy there was great as I was simply called and asked about the height as Brownells did not have the High ones. He told me he had the high ones and I simply commented I was wanting to get them from Brownells as I am a Dealer and get dealer priceing there. He sold me a high set for Dealer price. Now that is good business.
