I came accross someone selling a S&W 627-0 Model of 1989 5.5" unfluted cylinder and checkered top strap.
Does anyone know the going rate for one of these revolvers?

Well, it's not on the CA approved list, so it's gonna be worth more in CA due to market restrictions and lack of importability by FFLs.

the guy is asking 900 I'm just not sure if this is the going rate.

I'd look on gunbroker and gunsamerica, and go do a search in the classifieds forum and modern revolvers forum at www.smith-wessonforum.com to find out what they go for in general.
Then, add some to that for the Cali premium. How much of a premium depends on how hard they are to find and how big the demand is.
The 5.5" barrel was the most common of the early 627s. $900 sounds kind'a high to me, even in California, unless it's something special.
