I could be persuaded to trade a lifetime membership to "somewhere" for a lifetime NRA membership.

Bert, I just made that swap myself. It's good for everybody. I'm glad I can support both groups which are fighting to advance 2A rights at such a critical time. I hope you find somebody soon. I figure there will be a 3 day extension and then, they'll be gone for good.

Glad you got one. There might be hope for me yet.

I became a life member of the NRA thanks to this site and that deal last year. So far I haven't had any information come my way offering it to other people otherwise I'd add anyone on that wanted it.

I believe it was a "friends and family" deal.

I just got off the phone with the NRA about the life membership. I tried signing up, but they said the friend/life member would have to call and sign you up. I guess maybe they lost too much money through these kinds of attempts.

I messaged sdjetpilot and he provided me with his information.

The first rep I called told me he would have to call. sdjetpilot informed me that it varies based on rep, so I tried calling again. The 2nd rep signed me up no problem.

You do not have to get the life member to call. Just depends on the rep you talk to.

So I would try calling again. And again. Until you get a rep who will do it. It worked for me.

Once again, thank you sdjetpilot!!!

Is there any reason why a life member wouldn't want to sign up every single person on this thread? I really don't know the answer, so please let me know. the more lifetime members they have, the better....no?

A question for the people who had success. For the automated part, did you hit 1 and then 3? I've been doing 1 and then 2. Maybe that's why I've been having problems.

I'm a lifetime member, but I've never heard of this. I paid full price for my lifetime membership, and don't regret it, as I know the NRA can make use of that money. $300 sounds like a steal of a deal though, and I'd be willing to refer people using my membership # also, if such an offer exists. I need to find out more though, like do I get a limited amount of referrals? DO the referrals cost me anything?

As for Bert & John's messages regarding the "other" membership, which are they referring to? I might be interested in supporting another cause. Is it the CGF perhaps?

Thanks sdjetpilot, I just upgraded to a "Life Membership" and my packet is on its way! For those of you still on the fence, it was simple, call the 877-672-2000, hit #3 when prompted. I told them when they answered that I wanted to upgrade my current membership to a Life Membership and I had a sponsor. They asked for the sponsors number, I gave it, they confirmed the name, asked for my member number, confirmed who I was, they said "go ahead with the credit card number" I gave it to them and it was confirmed. I was off the phone as a life member in less than 4 minutes for $300.00, saving $700.00 over the current rates.....don't wait.....do it!

They then tried to upsell me. The numbers I called were -2000 and -2012. The second time I called -2000 they told me thier system was down and to call -2012. Iíll give it a try again tomorrow.

I just spoke with Diane at the 3888 number (took 2 calls and 25 minutes on hold to get thru) but I am in (Thanks Berto!).

Diane did ask me very nicely to tell my sponsor not to refer folks to the 3888 number - it is not the correct one for sponsored lifetime membership. There is apparently another phone number listed on the NRA's sponsored membership form that we all should be using. Diane said that it's just her and one other person at the 3888 number and they have been inundated with calls today. OOOPS!

I had just signed up a few days ago for the $25/year membership, so I was able to get them to credit the $25 I already spent towards the $300 life membership. So, the total (extra) was only $275! Quite a deal, if only for the gun insurance alone!

Good thing I saw this here as a deal or I would have never known...

I think those that are giving away $300 memberships (when others paid $500-1000)should have the recipient donate $100 to the NRA.

So they win with a life membership, and the NRA wins with a $100 donation, and the new member still saves at least $100.

Thanks to a generous fellow CalGunner, I had his membership info and called today to upgrade my regular membership to a Life membership. I spent about 15 minutes on hold (maybe closer to 20) and finally got through to Diane. She had my upgrade complete in about 2 minutes and my Lifer package is on its way. I did speak with NRA and to obtain the deal you must provide current life members name and NRA mebership #, the new member can then make their own payment. If any one of my calguns friends who is a life member would be willing to sponsor me and provide NRA# and name as a sponsor, I will call and make payment direct. Please IM me or contact me direct at 2nab@comcast.net. In return I will be willing to provide the same ssistance to another friend when the opportunity comes. Additionally, as a symbol of my appreciation I would be willing to offer my services to you as an AR-15 armorer (builds or upgrades) or with other minor gunsmithing/ trigger work. Most of my trigger gunsmithing work has been with rimfires such as Rugers, Brownings, Smith's, etc.

Please let me know If I can be your friend and you will allow me to purchase a life membership with you as my sponsor.

Just called in today (Saturday, February 25, 2012) at 15:10.
There is a pretty high level of incompetence on the customer service line. Half of them don't know what they can/can't do. "Let me check with my supervisor"...And then they still don't know...frustrating.
I finally got through on the 877-672-2012 (direct line to customer service). Told them I had a sponsor to gift me the $300 Life membership. Gave them the sponsor member number FIRST, NOT my member #. After speaking to probably a good 15 different people on 15 different phone calls, she was finally able to complete the order.

One person told me the new offer was only for new members not existing members. Several of them told me to call a different number. The new member customer service #, which is closed on Saturdays. A couple of them just didn't seem to know anything except I can't help you sir.

Woohoo...
I should have my life member packet on the way. Although, I would not be surprised if she screwed up the order somehow. Hoping that is not the case though. It wasn't actually clear if I will still have the same member # or a new member #. I have NRA certifications so I certainly hope I don't end up with a different member #. Wonder what that will do to my certs...hmmm...Just wait and see for the packet to arrive I suppose.

Thanks to Berto for being my sponsor! You rock!

I wonder if they have someone monitoring this thread. Keep getting the same response regardless which number I call. Every rep is telling me the sponsor needs to call in on my behalf.

Going to give up for the day and try again tomorrow. Anyone else having this much trouble?

Attempt #31

Well I thought I was going to give up, but decided to keep trying...no luck. The last person I spoke with said people have been abusing the "gift" so the only way to get the life membership is to have a life member call in with my credit card number to process it.

Oh well, looks like it was too good to last. Congrats to all who successfully completed this deal. I guess it's true what they say - the early bird gets the worm.

Just did this and got through on the first ring. Asked for sponsers name and number, then my info and CC# and literally was signed up in less than 15 mins. No fuss, no muss. :)

Called the 1-877-672-2012 number FYI.

Here's hoping it goes through from here smoothly.

Good job - looks like your Karma is better than mine. I just tried again and they still won't do if for me. Now they are telling me they can't find my Sponsor's membership number and need to transfer me to a different division and that didn't work either.

They must really not want me as a member :) well at least they don't want me as a discounted member.

Yup tried that number and the 3888 and all the other numbers listed here.

I know the feeling. I tried yesterday and kept getting the same result after being on hold 15-30 mins each time. Keep trying perseverence pays off.

On the 1-877-672-2000 try Option #3 on the menu. That seemed to do the trick for others on this forum and some others posting this "deal". If you get Dianne it appears you'll be golden.

Definetly double check if you can, the members # and name are correct. They also wanted me to confirm the sponsor's mailing address which I didnt have but just said the one they read back to me was the correct one.

Good luck!

Sour Grapes! LOL I'm just saying... I like many others paid 1K for their life memberships in support of the NRA and what they do. Kinda to me means something.

NRA offered this to life members to give to family at a discounted rate not everyone and there mom on the block which this is turning into...

Call me the hater or what not but all this means is that to be a life member isn't the same now that everyone gets one for 300 when I like many paid 1K. I mean they have an extended plan to pay the dues for those who cannot pay all at once. Just saying...

I guess the life card in my pocket just worth / weighs 700 dollars more than yours!

I could understand you are a little pissy about spending $700 more for the same thing, but to say it's worth more or means more just doesn't really hold any weight at all, to me. It's almost like bragging about spending more on the exact same car than the next guy and touting that must mean that your car is better or you really wanted that car more. Just silly. I'd be pissy to if I were you. But, I'd also say kudos to you guys for getting the deal I didn't.
It could very well be that myself and many others do more for the NRA and the sport in general than you and others besides writing a check. Writing a check is easy to do. Spending the time and actually doing the real leg work to promote is another. I can tell you that I do the legwork almost on a daily basis. I'm not just a show up to the range guy, shoot and go home. Take that for what you want. And I'm not saying you don't do the right thing or anybody else, just using an example.
Cheers!

Hey, by no way am I being pissy, I am just stating the obvious. Its the principle of the thing. Becoming a life member meant something. For everyone its different from the guy that writes the check to the guy who made the extended payments for X amount of years. Its a sense of accomplishment and meant something.

TO compare it to paying more for a materialistic item as a car is way off take... it is apples to oranges and is not even comparable.

Also, if you are a crusader for the 2A, kudos to ya! I do what I can when I can, maybe not as much as you. I would think you being such a stand up guy you would have no problem do the extended payment plan if you could not afford the 1K up front.

To each his own... obviously to the ones taking offense to this and responding to my opinion must be touching some moral issue. I will lose no sleep at night knowing people are getting a membership for 300, when normally and what most people pay is full price. As will many of the people I guess, "Taking advantage of this offer," expressed to other life member's for family ONLY.

I just suggest that you not be that guy at a NRA event in the back with you beer bragging to everyone who more than likely paid full price on how you acquired yours....

I agree with you, I wouldn't ever rub anyone's face in it as you mention about bragging about it. It never even really crossed my mind in that manner. Just not something I am into doing. I don't like to knock people down in order to lift myself up. I really despise that in people when I see it come out in them.
Perhaps in this tough economy, people are feeling it easier to do the 300 and can justify that amount versus the 1000 or even somewhere in between. To each their own.
And, I agree with you as well, we do what we can with what we have.
And, I wasn't really offended or took offense, just trying to show a different view point. Your points are taken as well.
So be it. Cheers to ya just the same MacOtac.

Call whatever number you want, BUT ask to speak to to "headquarters." This will get you transferred to DC office, IIRC. Most of the numbers route you through a call center. They can't do as much as the main. I had 2 buddies sign up yesterday. One got stuck with a call center person and spent 45 minutes before being transferred to Steve at HQ. Took about 3 minutes to complete after transfer. Second friend just asked for headquarters membership. Good luck.

All good, no offense taken and I understand in many's point of view this is a good deal. But, to be part of the NRA as a life member, joining that crowd, I would like to think it means something.

As for the economic times... They offer an extended payment plan and give you an ELP card while you pay it off. There is no obligation to pay every month and you balance stays the same until you can make you next payment. Minimum I think is $25.

Again to each his own, best of luck to you and keep fighting a good 2A fight!

I think the point is that you're not buying a car or a "thing," you are making a donation to an org that will use your money to help a cause. As an incentive to get people to donate more, they offer "levels" of membership which don't mean too much other than bragging rights. But if a large quantity of people obtain a certain status level without donating as much as others did, it cheapens the prestige of that status level. And since prestige was pretty much the only thing going for it anyway, I could see how some would be p!ssed about that.

So going back to making a donation, one way of looking at what you said would be to interpret it as "I donated $700 less than you did to a cause that helps us all, aren't I cool." Well, if your goal is to save money, sure. If your goal is to help the 2A, you definitely helped, but arguably those who paid full price helped more.

I wanted to do the $300 Life Membership until I came to this realization myself. Now I'm doing EPL and plan on making more than the minimum payment each month. I want to wear the "life member" pin or put the logo in my sig, but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so knowing I obtained Life Member status without making the full donation. But that's just what makes me happy; to each their own.

That is why they have the extended payment plan for life member. Make payments when you can, still a member as you pay it off at your pace, but like he said above, when you are done you can be proud to be a life member. Not just say you are one!

:) I have many things I could say but I'll just say I'm glad that I can afford to be a lifetime member under a deal that they offered, and I doubt I could justify it at a higher price. If in the future I am financially better off than currently, maybe I'll give more...but honestly, I'll probably just support another parentless kid in Africa instead. To each his own, but I tell you what, I'll be happy to say I am a lifer and if you don't like that, well, that's your problem now isn't it.

Whether it be $300 or $1000 you are getting a good deal. The insurance that they give you alone is a great deal. I mean the way I look at it, is you get the Leather Jacket if you do the $1000.00, and for $300 you get a hat.

I will say though there are also different levels of Life Memberships too. There is Endowment, Patron and Benefactor Memberships. Once you become a Life member there are deals that you can get to bump up to Endowment for $250 more and so on. I don't think there is any shame on getting something for a lower price. You're supporting the organization no matter what.

This is a really touchy subject...

On one hand, you have someone able to tell people, that they are a Life Member, of the NRA, for only $300.

On the other hand, you have someone who can tell people, that they are a Life member of the NRA, and they gladly paid $1000 to do so.

About 2 years ago, there was a similar thread, and I actually started the process for the $300 Life membership....that's when I thought about it, and remembered that this was not about bragging rights, but about donating to the largest and most powerful 2A machine in the World.
At the time, I had lost my full time job, and didn't have the money for the $1000, so I gladly started the EPL program.

At the end of the day, my card will say the same as those who paid $300....supporting the NRA, at any price, is still supporting the NRA. IMHO, your membership is the 2nd single most important thing you can do.

The first, and most important, is taking new people out shooting.

Andrew

voiceofreason

The main "bragging rights" are that the NRA can say "We have this many members."

Just because somebody can invest $300 today instead of the full $1,000 another day doesn't mean that they won't invest more later.

$300 today > $0 waiting to pay the full $1,000 which might never happen

Andrew is correct that we must proactively encourage more of our fellow citizens to exercise their 2A rights.

I've brought many antis overs to the neutral side in less than 3 trips to the range.

A brick of .22 + .22 rifle + red dot optic + a safe & fun experience
= an anti questioning why they hate guns so much.

The most difficult part is getting antis to understand that a gun is a piece of metal that doesn't do anything unless a person picks it up and uses it in some way.

They see it as symbol of evil and violence.

The NRA does it's part through money and influence to educate/litigate/effectively "legislate", but it's up to us as gun owners to set the tone of how others view guns.

Whether a life member through $300, $1,000 or someone that isn't a member but donates regularly... we're all on the same side.

Enlisted, reserve, ROTC, we're all on the same side (stop snickering!).

ok, after being turned down yesterday and told that the lifer had to call in, I called in again with a sob story about my dying father's last wish being that I become a life member (I jest), and it looks like they extended the offer and let me pay, without any hassle about being an existing member.
