If you had to use only one muzzle device, Brake, comp, suppressor or hider on every rifle (AR or variant) for life, what would you choose?

PWS, least recoil, least flash of them all. Surefire if you plan on ever mounting a can. Had the distinct privilege the other day of shooting the PWS side by side with the Battlecomp 1.0, no comparison despite what people here claim. Even the owner of the Battlecomp was surprised at the difference the PWS offers.

Good thread. I'm wondering what to pin permanently on my 14.5" middy upper. My current candidates:

-Battlecomp 1.5: I have a 1.0 on my 16" carbine and it rocks--kinda pricey tho. But it keeps muzzle rise down and has decent flash hiding abilities (and not too loud IMHO).
-YHM Phantom 5C2: great hider/comp for a great price-- the economical choice. But it's a little long.
-Smith Vortex: heard great things about it-- but the open prongs are known to snag and also to ting like tuning fork when you fire it. Also, those prongs don't look too robust.
-PWS: heard great things about this device too but it's not for me-- I shot next to one. While it might be good for the shooter it's too loud and obnoxious IMHO.

Kinda leaning towards the BC 1.5...

Has anyone tried the Effin-A comp and taken the time to tune it to their rifle? If so, how did it help with muzzle rise? And what is you opinion of it over-all? I have been very curious about this one.

Yes, there isnt a point in buying it if your not going to tune it. It took me 25-30 rounds to get mine set and after that, no more muzzle climb.
My wife shooting mine. Keep in mind the comp is set up for me.

Good to know-- that is the other device I was considering. I spoke with Dimitri down at Oceanside when they were first developing this comp and got to check out the prototypes. Looked awesome and glad to see they're up and running. They make awesome stuff. The only thing that was an issue for me was playing around with the tuning--just not my thing.

Btw-- well done. She's a keeper.

Its very very easy to tune. It took me less than 5 min to do mine. I was shooting and had Dimitri watching and setting the screws in for me after firing.

I like my battlecomp over the PWS. I noticed with the PWS that the recoil goes side to side a bit when viewing from my eotech and the Battlecomp makes my eotech dot stay pretty rock steady making follow up shoots much smoother and easier. The PWS is a soft shooter but I just favor the Battlecomp much more due to its controllability and soft recoil as well.

I have a Knights triple tap on one rifle. It's my favorite brake for sure, but cost prohibits putting one on everything. They work really well. It's almost funny how little movement there is when you fire a shot. It's not 4 times better than a battlecomp for 4 times the money though, that's for sure. People love to hate them that have never seen, let alone shot or owned one.

I'm looking for a muzzle device that maybe used as a featureless 3gun rifle. I would like to stay out of the open division so a smaller one would be needed.

I'm not sure who made mine, but I LOVE it. Picked it up at a gun show. It has a compensation port series on top, and larger flash dispersion ports on the side. Made of aluminum.

It was designed for a larger diameter barrel, so I had to machine a sleeve to fit it properly. Sleeve had to be heated to slip onto the barrel (very tight tolerances) and I didn't take any chances there either - still drilled & pinned it and the muzzle brake in place to be sure they weren't going anywhere. Yes, it was a lot of work to make it work, but I really like this thing. Worth it.

*and yes, that pic was taken out of state - it does sport the requisite bullet button and 10 round mags here in SoCal.

This brake might be too effective, at least for this shooter....it depresses the muzzle...for single shots may be ok but multiple rounds, it drives the downward and off target...ideal performance of a muzzle brake would be for it to not move up or down. maybe a change in forearm grip position would help??

I've also seen this in another video. It was .308s though. The shooter did a side-by-side of PWS and BC.. multiple trigger pulls resulted with rounds in the dirt short of target.

AAC brakeout

This...

I just wish AAC had one for 5/8-24 or the larger thread sizes for .30 cal stuff. Unless their website just hates me and won't let me see them.

I love my Brakeout on my AR. Very little muzzle climb, probably just sideways jump due to me overcompensating. Almost no flash, just a small orange light from the compensator ports.

Downside, it's loud as beast when you're not directly behind the gun.

Hmmm, it might be the shooter. I run BCs on my 16" carbine and now my 14.5" middy-- no depressed muzzle and I've run both guns through courses where we are doing rapid fire-- hammer drills and such-- and all my shots land pretty dead center mass. I do use the latest "cool guy" Magpul Haley/Costa support side grip the majority of the time-- but even when I take quick hasty shots (2-3 round bursts) using a mag well grip, the muzzle stays nice and even. YMMV.

lots of good suggestions here, and like anything else there is not one device that does it all, so it really just depends on your application and what you want it do.

This is like asking, what is the best rifle ever? Ask 5 people you can easily get 5 different answers. Of course, this being calguns you could ask 5 members and get 4 guys saying AR, one guy saying AK and one noob getting banned :p
