I'm trying to make some modification to my Romanian AK47. One of which is to remove the stock front iron sight and replace it with a flip up iron sight that would fit on rail.

Is there such a thing? Please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Um, nothing that would line up with the stock rear. A lot of people do HK style sights are there saiga 12s and grind off there rear, or use a TWS dog leg to push the rear sight back.

LOL. I won't. Someone else suggested peep sight and that will work.

Prepare for a lot of custom fabrication. If you measure the height of the front sight base and the height of the front sight post, this is what needs to match if the rear sight base is used. The picatinny flip up sights you will find are overwhelmingly of a height specifically for the AR15 platform, that is to say, they are much too high. If you want to use the band of the current front sight base, you're going to have to cut off everything above the band that secures the base to the barrel, grind it level, trim a segment of picatinny rail to length and height and tack weld this to the front sight base (the base has to come off the barrel for all of this).

Now if you did your math correctly, you might have established a base with picatinny segment that is low enough that one of the shorter front sight posts will line up at the correct height for your rear sight. You might expand your options beyond just flip-up type front sights since you might find one that is a fixed pica-tinny type, but lower in profile than typical AR15 flip up types.

The only other alternative is to go for the high front sight and abandon the current rear sight base by replacing it with the combo of a picatinny rear sight aperture and either the TWS Dog Leg 2 top cover rail or the Beryl type picatinny mount (which is pretty tall) that goes over the top cover and secures at the stock tang bolt on the rear, with both types using a hinge at the rear sight base where the leaf sight ladder used to be. A very low picatinny rear might work here if you recalculate for a higher sight line.

A few side effects of the higher sight line will be your shots will impact higher than before at shorter ranges and if you aren't very careful during fabrication of the front sight you could introduce a few degrees of cant into what might have been a perfectly straight front sight before.

Good luck and please post your results.

Well, I have two plans. Keep the AK with it's original wood furniture et. al or really change it.

If I do, I was going to either slide the current front sight back as close as I can to the handguard or take it out completely and replace it with one of these.

Once I do that, I can get a fake supressor on there which will make the long barrel look a bit more bearable.

I was planning to pair the new welded on HK front sight with the rear peep sight from Mojo:

If I do all that, I will probably change out the handguard and stock as well so that they match better.

Hopefully, the plan will work.

Have Red Jacket Firearms do it for you with a grinder and flux core welder. It'll be a "game changer".

How about a Venom Tactical "Bolten Block" front sight/gas block and a Tech-Sights AK100/AK200 peep sight top cover with trunnion lock?

The shorter sightline will be compensated for by moving the rear sight to the back of the receiver. The sight base replaces the recoil spring assembly (it becomes one piece and fits into the T shaped recess on top of the trunnion). It's rock solid and highly recommended.

Optics still mount to a side rail, if you have one fitted.

Texas Weapons system rear railed top cover with a UTG railed gas tube is about the best you can do for now that is basically off the shelf. Then just mount on some Troy flip ups or something.. Unless you go super custom like me 8)

If you can find a Polish Beryl type front sight, that will line up with the stock AK rear and it folds. Good luck, i've been looking for a while.

Those tech-sights look promising. Too bad I didn't see your post before I went with the other peep sight. I may switch over at a later time. Thanks

It behooves me when someone wants to butcher a perfectly designed AK Iron Sights, designed to be 'open battlefield sights' so you can track multiple targets, in motion, and have a continuous assessment of the threat ahead!

AKs were NOT designed to shoot at a static targets at the range ...

BUT TO EACH IS HIS OWN!!!

NUFF SAID!
