The Sunbeam from Lensman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lensman#Weapons

Sunbeam: In Second-Stage Lensman, an entire solar system is converted to a vacuum tube, with asteroids and planets as grids and plates, to focus nearly the entire output of the sun into a beam capable of melting the surface of a planet in seconds. That's the conversion of 4.26 million metric tons per second of matter into energy, or 9.15 1010 megatons of TNT per second. Thus, it is a defense against attacks by "free" planets, which are rendered inert when their Bergenholms (inertialess drive units) are destroyed. The Sunbeam is an ultrawave vacuum tube rather than a normal one. This is demonstrated by the fact that its beam moves faster than light and can be retargeted on different objects in the outer reaches of the solar system in a matter of seconds.

I guess that's not really a gun though, huh?

Blade Runner. The movie prop was made from a steyr rifle receiver. Even kept the bottom metal and rotary box magazine. Still says "made in austria" on the side.

Sold at auction in 2009 for $270,000

To some, (sci-fi cultists) one of the most iconic and cool guns ever made. Ties with a Warhammer bolter which fires explosive 1 inch armor defeating shells..

AND, (no pics, cuz they cannot adequately demonstrate the power and coolness,) Gears of War, The Hammer of Dawn. It's a little laser pistol that paints a target, that, within a few seconds gets hit by a huge beam of energy from a reactor in orbit.
Kill. It takes everything. It gives nothing.

IMHO, The coolest weapon has yet to be built.

When I retire someday with a mill and lathe in my garage I will build the coolest weapon.

A shoulder fired, micro-mini-gun in 5.7x28 fed through a beltless feed mechanism from a backpack ammo magazine. I figure you could probaly carry a couke thousand rounds and achieve a cyclic rate of at least 3k/min. like the 7.62 big brother. That would be 40 seconds of automagic bliss!!!

Could you imagine how well that would work for "laying down some cover fire"?

Yup, I stopped playing over 10 years ago. Was stupid expensive back then. The prices now are close to 1/2 what I paid.

All the new video games for it completely lost the feel, there was some great ones that came out a while back that were turn based that kicked ***.

Ditto. I only played a little in the old days (this would have been 15 years ago), but loved the background material and all the extra stories and lore written into the old codex books.

It gave sort of the opposite view of what Star Trek gave you. Instead of leaving religion behind, humanity becomes entrenched in it; involving ourselves in wars that last a thousand years; civilizations so large that a single life has no value.

http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/members/vertigo+paris/albums/misc+pics-36/thread-derail-1953.jpg

Anyway, out of curiosity I did look into the streamlined rules a few years ago. It does seem like the game lost it's original feel with the new rules, not that it matters to me.

never read any of em, played the hell out of the table top games about 20 years ago though. Back then everything was imported from the UK and super $$$ and hard to find. I guess it made me the hipster of nerdy rpg culture :D

and here is my WH40k contribution

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3157/2835785616_cd8c975335.jpg

WH40K was so awesome! I hate to have to explain to the kids these days that the recently released video game was not a spinoff of Gears of war. The artwork and ideas in WH were the most original SCI-fi of theor kind.

Hell, even buzz lightyear from Toy Story was modeled after the space marines (look at his legs;)

gears of war, Alien, Starship troopers all owe hommge to warhammer 40k.

If you ever want to sell your bolter turret, please look me up.

CIWS is cool, really outdated though. It's based on a sector concept (the weapon actually fills "target sectors" with lead hoping to destroy an incoming missile or plane before it does damage. I would like to think that radar and targeting technology has advanced since then (actually I know it has) so that the things could actually aim at the incoming threat rather then "in the general direction". Directed energy weapons can be aimed directly at a threat for sustained periods from very far away. I'd like to see that tech translaed to a phalanx type device. Should save a lot of ammo. 3-4 targets can overwhelm the ammo capacity of the CIWS.

This is a one-off prototype that was produced for some people who have a interesting job description. Ruger Redhawk with 44 mag cylinder and barrell shimmed down to 7mm. Plastic sleeve around the bullet that plugs the gap as the bullet transfers into the barrel. The sleeve is like a sabot that is forced forward against the forcing cone when the shot is taken. It is flush with the tip of the bullet before ignition. This was fired in public on the street in NYC into a van that had the backstop. No-one noticed a thing, so VERY little sound and no ejected shell casing. With frangible ammo no rifling on the bullet. Why? I'm not privy to specifics about a target but from the above specs I'm sure you can figure out the potential

Very interesting. It would have been even better (and more on topic) if it used a dry ice projectile, leaving even less of a trace.

Could you imagine how well that would work for "laying down some cover fire"?

wow ive had this same idea for years now, from the backpack is a belt that runs over your shoulder and down your arm to the hand held mini gun.very cool idea
