Howdy yall,

I'm looking into ammunition for the m1a. Specifically, looking for some cheapo target ammo and some match-grade ammunition. What do yall shoot?

Also, does it matter if the ammunition is .308 civilian instead of NATO 7.62X51?

Thanks.

I used the German surplus for my cheap and either Federal Gold match 168 or Southwest Ammo 175 SMK for match grade

Radway Green Surplus .308 — Cheap and non-corrosive, and most importantly non-magnetic.

38.7 grains of IMR4895 in commercial cases with a Hornady 168 grain BTHP.

My M1A Scout eats pretty much anything. One of my favorites is the German, surplus battle packs of 200 rounds for something like $90 or so. Very good quality ammo. In fact, I shot about 100 rounds of it today at my local range.

It is magnetic, so keep that in mind if the place you shoot cares about such things.

The Scout is an awesome rifle. I'm torn between a Scout scope for it, or using the iron's. The iron sights are a joy to use and are my favorite rifle sights. I mounted a cheap, AIM 2-7X pistol scope to it, which makes it an even better performer for my old eyes.

Enjoy your rifle. They are truly a pleasure to own and shoot.

My Scout Squad shoots best with RL-15 and a 168gr Sierra Matchking.

I generally use the American Eagle .308 Win because that's what my gun shop stocks. .308 Win and 7.62x51 NATO should work equally well in your Scout.

You can't go wrong with Federal SMK 168 gr.

Shop around. Good deals are out there but but you have to look. Bulk ammo sellers may be a good place to start.

The 7.6251mm NATO cartridge is similar enough to the commercial .308 Winchester and SAAMI considers it safe to fire the NATO round in weapons chambered for the commercial round.

If you havent considered handloading yet, now would be a good time. Match .308 is expensive and you can make some really high quality munitions for a fraction of the cost

She's a full size rifle but she gets M80 ball, M118 Match, but mainly handloads. ;)

Mainly surplus - Radway, German/Men, Portugese, South African. It's the cheapest for having fun.
