Hey guys,

I was wondering does anybody use military surplus ammo in their AR15's, AK's, SKS's, etc?

If yes, where to get some cheap plinking ammo for these guns?

Thanks in advance!

I shoot mil surp 308win/7.62x51 through my SA M1A. That stuff is very accurate. I don't have a chronograph so I have no idea what the numbers are.

I got mine from Grafs (https://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/product/productId/11215). Brass case, berdan prime, non-corrosive.
item #MSA762X511 (https://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/product/productId/11215)

When I bought it, it came in thin, cardboard boxes. The brass was tarnished, but I just scrubbed it with a brass brush and no problems feeding and firing. In fact, I like this better than the Fed, Win, and Rem. I think it runs a bit hot.
- Manufactured by MEN of Germany in 1990s.
- Brass case, berdan primed, non-corrosive, & lead core.
- 20 rounds per box, 10 boxes (200 rounds) per sealed pack.
- 5 sealed packs (1000 rounds) per wooden case.

Surplus 7.62x54R is super common, surplus 5.45 is really common as well, "green tip" is plentiful for ARs but it's debatable whether or not it's surplus since a lot of it is contract overruns (it's also possible it's being made specifically for civilians, since our military probably doesn't have lots of "extra" ammo sitting around). 7.62x51 surplus from various countries is fairly common as well, but last I heard 7.62x39 was starting to dry up a bit (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

Milsurp is in no way guaranteed to be the cheapest ammo you can find. Well, for 54R and 5.45 it probably will be, but not necessarily other calibers. I personally like Ammunition To Go, they have a good mix of milsurp, factory, and reloaded ammunition. Shop around though, there's no real "one-stop-shop" where you can find every caliber at its absolute cheapest.

I know you guys are experts at finding good ammo at great prices and sources. I'm sure there are some noobs like me, who don't know ALL the wonderful sources you guys use for ammo. It would help if you shared your sources, prices, etc...that would actually help :p Thanks:D

as much as I can get my hands on the stuff, yes.

Various 7.62nato surp, lots of commie 7.62x39 and 54r esp Yugo when I can find it, and of course good ol Xm193

if it is good enough for organized Gov supported forces to shoot at live targets with, then its good enough for me to slay paper zombies with

last I heard 7.62x39 was starting to dry up a bit (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

Not drying up here; $3 per 15 rounds is the cheapest AK ammo around. And my local shop has stacks and stacks of spam cans worth.

M2 Ball (30.06) in my M1. CMP is the cheapest place I've found.

That's all I shoot through my Garand, but CMP is not very cheap. I've found it cheaper at the Bay Area Gun Vault.

Surplus for the sks or S&B. LC or commercial for 223. Some Match Military 45 and 762, but don't shoot it that much.

I have gotten it from local gun stores, calguns marketplace, gun shows, craigs list and a large variety of internet sources. You just have to research a little and figure out what it's worth to you. Then, when you find a great deal, snag it.
