View Full Version : Ar-10 recoil spring vs ar-15

The recoil on my ar10 seems a little harsh compared to my buddie's carbine ar-10. Mine has a mid length gas system with an a2 stock and ar10 rifle style buffer. I'm wondering if I perhaps put the wrong spring in. Would an ar15 spring in an ar10 cause harsh recoil? I bought 3 recoil springs for both rifle types (purchased 2 15's and 1 10 at the same time and they weren't labeled) they appear to be identical length.
Should the ar10 spring be noticeably different?

Depends if it is DPMS or Armalite springs.

The DPMS are defiantly different from .308 to AR-15.

WHen I had my .308 set up with the A2 stock it hit like a mule. I replaced that with Magpul ACS with DPMS .308 buffer and spring, then added the "enhanced" pad to the ACS, the felt recoil is now about the same as my AR-15 service rifle with an A2 stock. There's still a bit more but it feels softer and different, is the best way I can explain it.

Try a Tubbs flat wire, they make one for the .308. I use these on my 5.56 and 6.8 builds and they work good.

It's a DPMS pattern, I received 3 springs, 2 ar15and 1 ar10. Comparing the two outside the rifle, one is 1/4" shorter than the other ( just laying them on the bench side x side) Diameter appears the same. Since the ar-10 rifle buffer is shorter than an ar15 rifle buffer i guess I should have the LONGER buffer spring installed in the 10?

no it is the shorter one.

The AR-10 recoil spring is about 3/4 inch longer than a Ar-15.What kind of muzzle break do you have versus your friend. Does he have a heavy buffer from slash ? .If he has a 20 inch barrel versus 16 inch, yes there will be a differance,Also differant stock, ect.

Yep, google is my friend; fwiw; an ar-10 spring for dpms has 39 coils and is 12.75" long the spring I had in there was 12.50" and had 43 coils. Can't wait to see if the proper spring will mitigate some perceived recoil.

Good to know that an ar15 recoil spring will work in a pinch though! ( fired a couple hundred rds without any problems save for maybe the mule kicks)

Okay I just checked our inventory and I was wrong the .308 is longer. Sorry I messed up on this I was thinking of the buffers for some stupid reason.
