As of this morning I finally went featureless with my AK-104. After a year and a half of building and tweaking the gun I was happy to be going to be able to drop mags freely. However to my horror as I was looking at it, after all this time thinking I finally got it right, I managed to build the entire rifle on a non dimpled receiver. How this important detail eluded me is beyond my comprehension. Sigh, sometime you just can't win. Attention to the small things are what matter. Oh well at least I will still enjoy taking it to the range.

My gun works fine without dimples, and the mags are very tight.

But I also use poly mags.

Even if you don't have dimples that's still a BAMF looking AK.

Just sayin:43:

A dimpled receiver is a correct little, but significant detail & function, especially for a modern looking AK.

But no worries at all, the rifle looks fantastic IMHO.

Just enjoy it ;)

My dimpless AK works just fine with no more wobble than my dimpled one. Relax and enjoy.

I had my AK set up as featureless when I was in CA. Really wasnt a *huge* improvement when I pulled the fin off since I had a thumb rest on the fin.

meh, wish I had the money for new toys.

I doubt most people will notice a difference between our AK-104's :)

I bet anyone cant guess what I did wrong with my clone. You can see it if you know what your looking for :(

Great looking AK OP. You dont see many 100 series builds around.

I am not complaining about the rifle itself in terms of performance. Rather that to be correct it needs to have dimples. Why I managed to build an entire gun that I was trying to be correct and never notice something like that is beyond me. I will still use it, and I doubt I will really ever run into more than mine at the range. Just me chastising myself more than anything. Also the mags lock up tight. It was more of a correct appearance thing for me. I will run the rifle regardless. I am a perfectionist too my detriment sometimes.

Lack of cleaning rod? I used an AMD-65 one on mine and it fit perfectly. Sweet rifle btw. I also like the fact you have the older angled type stock and release mechanism. Mine is the straight newer type.

Would much rather use that then a maglock.

This build has the correct rivet patten on the rear trunnion. The top "through" rivet should have a round head (as it does) on the right side of the receiver and the lower two should have flat heads (as it does).

All the heads on the left side rear rivets should be flat.

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w201/SVT-40/AK/IMG_0656-1.jpg

To be absolutely correct in addition the front trunnion rivet heads visible inside the mag well should have domed heads not flat heads as in the below photo.

It's pretty easy to cut and weld a regular AK-74 or SAIGA cleaning rod to fit the AK-105/ AK-104 pattern rifles.

Mine are close tho this. I tried the best I could to get the top rivet on the left side round. All other rivet are round with the exception of the internal rivets in the mag well. I have since added a cleaning rod. I couldnt find the correct Ak-104 rod so I just chopped an ak rod for the look lol.

Thanks for all your help SVT 40. Here is my AK-102 with the fudged cleaning rod.

dimples allow you to brag about having them on internet forums, like this one.
Not having dimples allows you brag about how your AK works just fine on internet forums, forums like this one :D

Don't forget the rear trunnion has domed rivets on the inside and the puck in the trigger guard.
