I am looking into making a California legal Dragunov in 7.62x54r. I wanted to find out if the stock on the Dragunov can be taken off and replaced with a regular AK stock? So that the pistol grip is no longer on the rifle. Thus making it California legal. Also I have been looking at the list of baned AK's. And I haven't found a baned Dragunov. Does that mean all of them are legal, if they don't have evil features? If this all works out all I will have to do is have someone outside of California do the switching of stocks then have it shipped to a FFL in California. Thanks for any help or advice.

dragunov stock is still a pistol grip. you would have to fill it.

Can the stock be removed and switched with a regular ak stock that does not have a pistol grip?

yes, the akm stock set will work on the romanian dragunov version. i think there is a picture on dragunov.net in the galleries with one. http://dragunov.net/owners.htm

If its a Romanian type Dragunov clone it MIGHT work...but I'm not sure (you would have to check the angle.)

I think that you best bet is to fill the hole in the stock.... ala

The Romanian PSL(this is apparently the more correct title of the rifle) can use basically the same wood. But it isn't a very comfortable grip. I put a AK stock from Ironwood on my PSL just to see how it would fit. It was for a Romanian straight cut receiver, and more or less fits, but has an ugly gap. The radius cut receiver AK stock would probably fit better, but they didn't have those available yet.

I will probably go back to the original stock and try to fix the mag or fill the thumbhole. It just doesn't seem right without the thumbhole stock.

There are people making new stocks for it, and Ironwood(who happens to be in CA) has talked about making a stock specifically for it.

From that link before:

You know, if it had the synthetic black furniture, it would actually look pretty sweet.

If you're interested in the Romanian PSL, and want one minus the pistol grip or thumbhole, than buy the SSG-2000 from Interordnance and remove the pistol grip:

It won't be comfortable, but it will work. Filling in the original thumbhole stock will give you a better handling rifle. It's much more shooter friendly. Ironwood is supposed to be working on a PSL specific buttstock that mimicks the Russian PKM's buttstock:

Just attach the buttstock without the pistol grip.
