Anyone held one or both? Which feels better?

Im sick of this bullet button stuff, good enough for the range but not for combat or even a carbine training.

I think I am going to go with the solar wrap myself... but the MM seems like it would just be better with the A2 stock which I am also considering.

I have a hammer head grip right now, but I think I am going to sell it...

MM just looks cleaner, but I dont know if I am gonig to dislike the grips angle vs the wrap...

IIRC, riflegear sells the grip wraps now.

I've tried both. I didn't like the MMG, with the angle it felt like it was going to slip out of my hand when holding the rifle muzzle down. I traded my MMG with a guy for his grip wrap. He didn't like the grip wrap, but loved my MMG. I love the grip wrap.

Point is, try them all (don't forget the hammerhead) and then pick your favorite.

I use a wrap on my AK and Uzi. Def recommended.

MM is a bit more angled compared to the kydex wrap from solar tactical, the wrap goes on top of your pistol grip so you retain the hold on the grip, just no thumb around the PG. I used to have a MM on my AR and now I have the wrap on my saiga. I like the wrap better. Got a chance to shoot the hammerhead grip, it's a bit awkward for me. Try to find some to hold, next time you're at the range, walk down the lanes and see if anyone have one on. I'm sure they'll let you try it if you ask them.

You can get them at www.solartactical.com

They were running an awesome deal over Black Friday, picked up a MIAD wrap for only $26, usually run $40. They also had the standard A2 for only $20

Solar Wrap for me. You honestly need to try both and decide what fits you better. Sell whichever one you don't like.

agreed. Personally i'm going with the mm grip. It just sits nice with the a2 stock i'm going to use.

Solar Tactical slip ons have not been approved by DOJ. Are they ok?
Im sure many run them, but if a LEO would to approach you, what would you say?

DOJ isn't going to "approve" anything, other than define what a pistol grip is, and a proper grip wrap isn't a pistol grip anymore. If you're looking to be able to call the DOJ and ask if it's ok, it's never going to happen.

If LEO approaches you, keep your mouth shut. If LEO arrests you, keep your mouth shut and call the calguns foundation.

Have both, but have replaced all but one MM with ST grip wraps (and that one will be replaced soon). It's a matter of feel; I very much agree with the comments about trying the various "featureless" grips yourself and then deciding. Trying them first might help avoid the additional expense of buying "trial versions" and then having to sell those you don't like.

This is my featureless MMG grip AR, MMG all the way, if you are going for a featureless AR.

EDIT: Other than the fact that I am stuck with a fixed stock, I LOVE the MMG. I got used to it's "uglyness," but the fact that it doesn't allow my thumb to wrap around the grip allows me to manipulate the ambidextrous safety with my thumb without losing my "action-ready" grip on the rifle.

I'd go with the solar wrap. The monsterman grip is just too far back for me.

one way to test out if you want grip or MM, just hold the pistol grip on your ar now, but don't let the thumb cross over. keep the thumb pointed up and that is pretty much how the grip wrap will feel.

The Solar Wrap is as close as you can get to the normal AR15 grip.

Personally, I've tried both and I prefer the MMG as I find I can hold the gun with one hand with the MMG but not with the wrap grip.

... the fact that it doesn't allow my thumb to wrap around the grip allows me to manipulate the ambidextrous safety with my thumb without losing my "action-ready" grip on the rifle.

Either way you go, don't forget about the ambidextrous safety. An AR safety isn't really usable with these types of grips unless you use the rifle with your left hand.

Solar all the way.

I recently went on the timer with a Solar wrapped AK vs an AK with a grip angled like the MM. Due to the Solar grip maintaining a proper grip angle, I found I could shoot ~25% faster due to my trigger finger working straight back vs at an angle. That equated to 12 rounds in two seconds with the Solar vs 8-10 rounds with the angled grip (both from low ready). It was a clear and repeatable advantage.

I'm probably more accurate shooting without a "broken" wrist too, but I don't have numbers for that.

Wrap, all the way.

I made a Kydex wrap for my A2 grip/Ace Skeleton stock combo so it wouldn't have a gap. Have to say, with an ambi safety it's not bad. Looks silly (lots of comments from out-of-state friends), but feels fine.

What he said. Here's my GAU-5P with hammerhead. I have a wrap on my AK, but prefer the Hammerhead. Has faux-FH and pinned CAR stock.

It's great to have choices in a bad situation but why limit yourself to just two choices? You've got another option (of those products currently in production).

For example with this kit (click the image to view or order from our secure online store):
https://www.exilemachine.net/shop/images/I/IMG_1235_KIT.JPG (https://www.exilemachine.net/shop/hammerhead-complete-featureless-type-i-ii-kit-45449.html)
and your choice of muzzle brake, you can configure your featureless rifle three different ways and try them all out at the range within minutes (I did just that on Thursday at our local law enforcement range):

https://www.exilemachine.net/shop/images/I/IMG_1236_TYPE_I.JPG
Type I Configuration

https://www.exilemachine.net/shop/images/I/IMG_1228_TYPE_II.JPG
Type II Configuration

https://www.exilemachine.net/images/customer_photos/CP009.JPG
Type III Configuration

You can switch from Type I to Type II with a flick of a 3/16" allen wrench. Going from Type I to Type III is a bit more involved but the only tools you need are that same allen wrench and an AR-15/M4 stock wrench (https://www.exilemachine.net/shop/tapco-enhanced-ar-15-m4-stock-wrench-11662.html) (which you should have in your rifle bag anyway).

If you already have a collapsible stock, it's easy to jump into a Type III config on the cheap.

On the hammerhead does your thumb come over the top? If so, is the reason its legal because of the angle?

SuperSet
12-03-2011, 1:23 PM
Yes, that's one of the benefits of the HH vs the Solar Tac/MMG. It's legal because the web of your hand above the trigger guard. Good grip but I prefer the Solar Tac.

Your thumb does go over the top.

It's legal because the web of the firing hand stays above this line:
http://www.exilemachine.net/images/IMG_8060_CLINE.JPG

And because in testimony at trial* the CA DOJ says it's legal!

Why isn't a rifle with a grip wrap still an AW? Doesn't it still have a pistol grip?

vandal
01-21-2012, 11:36 AM
That would depend on the definition of "pistol grip", would you agree?

lol @ all of these crazy things.
put a kydex wrap on your pistol grip, it less than $30 and with 3 screws you can be back to normal configuration.

do you happen to know if they have one installed on a wall rifle to shoulder? I hate buying stuff then finding out its not right for me and have to trial & error till I find the right fit.

And I agree with others here - I'm kinda over the need for BB... I dont really like the idea of a wrap, but I'd like to get a feel for it and see if it's worth considering.

I use both. I put MMG's on builds with A2 stocks. Those with pinned Magpul stocks get the Solar Tactical wrap. Either way the appearance and function are very good once you get used it.

IMHO these solutions are better and faster than a maglock anytime.

I bought a hammerhead and couldn't get used to it at all. Luckily I was able to get a blemished one, so it was worth the $15 to see if I liked it. I've ended up going to a kydex wrap.

I like the MMG, its more aesthetically more appealing to me. I need to have at least one featureless for a true combat/SHTF rifle with a true detachable mag.

You really need to hold them all to decide.

I have or have had lowers configured with all of the featureless options. I prefer the Hammerhead and U15 stock for an overall carbine because of the fact that you can still wrap your thumb around them. It really aids in control.

I also still have solar tactical wraps on one AR lower and one AK but prefer to use them for bench work.

I tried the wrap and I tried the MMG. Finally settled on the Hammerhead. This one is going to strictly be preference.

for me, that's what Raddlock is for ;)

I'm interested in featureless for normal (non-shtf) range/training

*Edit... I know, I know - train with what you would use... point is, we all know no one will be concerned about mag locks if/when shtf.

Has there ever been any comment from DOJ re. kydex wraps & pinned stocks?

From browsing the forum, it appears that MM & HH have been more or deemed legit by DOJ.

I have a MMG on my 24" varmint AR. I love it. It is the best I've ever seen for shooting in the prone position and most of my coyote shots are taken that way.
