Everyone is different.

Some like basic AR's with no special additions. Others like scopes, triggers etc.

Depends on the person and the purpose.

Assuming this is a defensive gun (home defense, etc).

Here is what you want:

1. Quality Rifle (Colt, BCM, DD, Noveske, KAC, etc).
2. Quality RDS (Aimpoint, EOTech, etc).
3. Quality white light (SureFire, Streamlight).
4. Quality Sling (BFG Vickers)
5. Quality Carbine Training on how to use it (Vickers Tactical, Hackathorn, Defoor, Falla, etc).

i know an AR is the lego bin of rifles and you can build with what ever parts you find. but why not find some AR stuff that every one SORT OF has in common. hints the "musts" in the title. just being thoughtful and trying to make a help full thread to give idea's if some one gets the idea for certain type of set up they see the thread and say hey those guys have a good idea about that, ill research further about that type/style of part.

It is but there are certain parts you use on certain builds. If you are just looking for a plinking rifle that is light and easy to carry, you wouldn't run a 24" stainless steel barrel. You also wouldn't want to run a 16" barrel with a 1:9 twist to shoot 1K.

Do you know why people post their scope / lower / trigger / upper /stocks info? It's because someone is going to ask eventually so you might as well get it out of the way.

What the hell is the point of this thread?
Are you asking for build help?
Or after 21 posts of infinite wisdom are you telling us all your new rules for calguns?

A barrel, BCG, upper and lower receiver, trigger parts, and takedown pins are all 'musts'. A gas tube, magazine, and buffer tube assembly are nice to have if you want to shoot semi-auto. Handguards, a stock, and a set of sights are nice, too. I'd recommend you get all that stuff if you can afford it.

It also helps when you make a post asking questions, that you don't treat the reader(you know, the people you want answers from) like a 5 year old.

what exactly are you looking for?

Here's a good rule. Always have bullets to shoot your AR. Put whatever you want on it that make sense to you.

Have fun, be safe.

FYI ask a question if you want a answer. Worked for me in the past.

sorry for being so confusing, seeming childish, and an a**.

i was trying to just make a nice thread for basic know how and what types of things to buy. im not building an AR. this was for others.

quite frankly after reading some of your comments i dont know if some of you are "grown men", as put by one of you.

whether im 6 or 106 years old you should treat a fellow gun owner and shooter with some respect.

if you dont like my thread have a monitor delete it.

for the ones who didnt post sarcastic or childish comments, and were helpful i thank you for being up-class citizens.

If I was going to build a basic AR

Upper
A2 upper
16 or 20 in chrome lined barrel with 1:7 twist
Plastic hand guards
(no optic. use the irons first and then build second AR with what you learned using the first)

Lower
A2 stock with 20 in barrel or 6 position with 16 in barrel
Stock pistol grip
BB
10 round mag of your choice

There are three products that will transform any rifle into a much better one:

Geissele trigger
Vltor Gunfighter charging handle
BattleComp

These are in addition to a good light and sling which are absolutely essential.

Yeah, you don't NEED any of those.

You need ammunition.

Stuff I must have on my AR-pattern rifles:
decent heavy or stiffer barrel: prefer stainless over chrome-lined over cr-moly (only the .308 is cr-moly)
two-stage trigger: preferably 3lb 1st and 1.5 lb 2nd (all four have them now)
scope: 3-9x is the minimum on the carbines (have to fix the one w/ just a red dot), the target rifle has a 5-15x40 while the .308 has a cheap 6.5-20x50.
piston kit: only 2 of 4 right now but it isn't for lack of trying to find them.

The thread has been posted ad nauseam here, not to mention almost any other gun forum on the web.

"Grown men" differs when you discuss mental or physical age, sometimes.

Your comment re: respect is perfect.

Why the prejudice against "sniper"? It's an honorable trade and not at all easy to qualify for.

First of all buy ammo 223 or 5.56.

+1. The right ammo is always a must on any firearm.

Then buy some P mags after that what ever mods you can't live without.

Not only PMags, but make sure the mag being used (C-Products, GI, etc...) works reliably.

If I were you I would shot it first and then decide what add on I wanted. JMHO.....
Another +1.
