So, i am considering the following upper for one of my two paper weights:

http://www.spikestactical.com/new/z/upper-556-16-m4-le-w9-bar-rail-p-661.html

If i am schooled correctly, i assume the only thing i would need to do is have them change out the flash hider for a muzzle break, yes?

I am an AR (and gun in general) n00b, so any advice on why i shouldnt by this particular upper and go with something else?

Ideally, i'd like to stay $800 or under. i like the flat top since i plan to mount optics (second paper weight build will be open sights). i also like the quad rail.

Any other suggestions? better? something im not seeing?

I sent in an email to spikes seeking lead time. I also went to my local gun store and they said not to bother them just for an AR upper and that the best place to go is online (cheaper)

Any advice appreciated.

Paper weight? Do you plan on not shooting them?

Do you mean 80%s?

thats an expensive paperweight lol

thats a good upper, but it will be tough to stay within your 800. with that upper, it leaves you with about $100 for lower, parts kit, and stock(the plumb crazy lower will be your only option if you can find an ffl with one in stock)

my advice, either raise your budget, or go for the upper with the plastic handguards.

while the BAR rail is awesome, you can have the same upper without it

IN STOCK: https://www.primaryarms.com/Spike_s_Tactical_16_Inch_M4_LE_Upper_5_56_p/stu5025.htm

better yet, the Midlength version also IN STOCK:

Same flatop to mount an optic. Then all you need is a single backup sight.

The "paper weight" mention stems from when i originally bought these two uppoers from san jose gun exchange back in 2006. This is when my army buddy messages me with "they are gonna list they are gonna list, buy some lowers now!". And then they never listed so we just called them paper weights, lol.

Anyways, laziness has kept me from building them up, so i figure now its time.

I should clarify, the $800 budget is just for the upper. I know there will still be more to buy, LPK, stock, mags, etc. I am not considering that with this amount.

Cool story, much has changed since then. I was strictly a pistol shooter just lurking calguns back in '06.

I remember all my shooting friends urging me to by a lower, cuz they were gonna get banned "soon". Fast forward to 2011, both Colt and S&W are marketing California Specific ARs. And it all started in this forum, pretty cool...

Thanks for the links, that really seems to bring the price down too obviously, which i like. Question tho, would i need to have them swap out the flash hider? or do i just switch it out with a muzzle break (im a bit foggy on this part)

flash hider is perfectly legal on a bullet button equipped rifle, swapping it out would be personal preference
